'Piston slap' is a condition where the piston is able to rock back and forth just a little bit. Usually this is a cold weather / cold engine condition. Some do it worse than others.

The basic issue is the pistons have very little skirt area, which allows the piston to rock in the first place. GM says it is a normal condition, and as long as it isn't burning oil you can ignore it.

a piston slap is not a normal term..although I have heard of it...this means the bore of the cylinder has gone bad and the piston is slopping around in it or the rings have gone bad...which would mean oil consumption.

perhaps he means a rod is knocking. this occurs when a piston rod bearing has worn and the rod is knocking on the crank shaft.

If you take care of the car as you say you do...I would get a second and even a 3rd opinion. as this don't sound like the problem. this car is a 2001...do you have the 70,000 mile or 7 yr power train warranty?

If so...drop it off and tell them to call you when it's fixed...and call them every day

if it doesn't...perhaps you should check your mail...you may have a warranty extension sitting there that you can use..just a thought.

either way...if it's not knocking and not losing power...I'd say they can fix the problem for a lot less than they are telling you. Go to an independent garage and see what they say. a real mechanic would fix it not replace it

there are mechanics...then there are parts replacers..ask your "mechanic" which he is...

good luck

I will guess that your engine is a 3.1 v-6 . These motors have skirtless pistons which are noisy especially when cold, but will not affect durability.I would advise a second opinion before having a repair .

If it is piston slap, and it only does it when the engine isn't yet warmed up, but goes away when the engine is warmed up, then you most likely will be alright.
