why is the productivity of the ocean is equivalent to that of a desert?

Bacause the bottom of the foodchain is allways plant. Plants depend on sunlight, and sunlight can only travel a finite distance in seawater. Usualy no plants live bellow 100 feet, and most of the seabed is lower than that.
Although you have a lot of plankton by the surface, by and large the oceans can be classified ar desert.

why? i thought ocean is more prodictive.because its larger.
