I have the formula that my colorist uses, but it seems like it's pretty difficult to apply the color yourself. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this or has found a website that has good instructions? It would save a lot of money.

I have naturally brown hair that has about 25% grey in it. I had been going to a salon for color, about every 6 weeks, and highlights about every 3rd time.

The expense really started to get to me, plus the fact that the root line seemed to be showing up after 4 weeks.

So, I started coloring it myself at home, using Nice n Easy. I use a medium ash blonde color which seems to color the grey and make it appear to have natural highlights.

I do it once a month, when roots start to appear.

I found it difficult at first too....til I bought some applicator brushes.
They are available at Sally's Beauty Supply for a couple of dollars, and what a difference they make! The End of the brush has a long point, which makes separating the sections of hair very easy.

I squirt the color into a bowl, apply by sections to the roots. Starting at the temples, then the top, then the back.

After about half the time is up, I brush it thru my hair, then wait another 20 minutes.

I rinse it off in the shower...then use the hand held shower head to spray down the walls and shower curtain. So that staining is not a problem.

Should you get some of the color on something by accident, a product called Sea Breeze applied to a cotton ball gets it off in a jiffy.

Good luck!

if it is just color you just start in the front, make many parts in your hair from front to back and apply color to all the parted areas, I start in the front right, then the front left side, then I split the back down the middle and work from middle to right, then middle to left. after all the roots are covered I wait until the last 10 minutes to work the color through the rest of the hair. Just use the plastic bottle tip to part the hair, applying color to the part as you go in a line. Easy to do once you have a system. Good luck.

buy over the counter...this things have DIY instructions inside the package... It's really easy y'know. Otherwise, you could ask assitance from someone at home to help you color hard to reach areas of your hair. Also use foil to separate strands of hair when doing highligts. The effect is pretty much the same as salon-made.

Don't apply it yourself. Trust me. I've taken cosmetology twice, and I'm going to hair school at the end of this year. My advice is get someone who knows what they're doing. Make sure they do your roots first. Be careful though. If you're trying to make a drastic change it might screw up. What colour is your hair now, and what colour are you going to? There are different types of hair dye you need to use if you're going certain colours or your hair could turn green or reddish.

Make sure you get your roots first. Go down the middle, then fold each layer over and get those roots. Then lather it all in. I have done this myself after plenty of Solon trips. The best advice is do it often.....every 5-6 weeks. This makes it easier. Good luck

Yeah, well I use to do it myself, and then I started going to the hairdresser, and then I did myself again, and it looked afwul, so I'll stick to her, lol. However, I have blonde hair, I tried to lighten it once, and my roots like orange, the 2nd time I tried to high light it and it didn't look right. My mom does hers by herself and it looks okay, b/c her hair is brown, and she'll just darken it every now and then. Goodluck!
