Someone suggested that the motor could be running without actually emitting microwaves and that it would be safe to see if something would heat up while the door was open, but I am a bit suspicious. Also, since this is happenening, should I also be concerned about using it with the door closed? If I do continue using it should I unplug the microwave to put food in and take it out?

The safety catch must be jammed. Some microwave ovens have a catch to sense if the door is opened or closed. Its better to throw it away or send it for repair. You don't want to risk explosing to microwaves.

To see if the microwave is actually on, use tongs or a broom or something that will kepp you at a distance of at least a foot (microwaves do not travel far) and put some foil or another metal inside.

If it sparks, microwaves are active.

Get rid of it and get a new one.

Don't clown around with a malfunctioning electrical devise. Throw it in the garbage tonight.

Please do not continue to use the microwave!! Throw it away and go get another one - microwaves are to be treated with respect.
