It has nothing to do with you, and everything with who you are in Christ.
As it is written: "If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you do not belong to the world and I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you." (John 15:18-19)

I don't hate Christians at all. I just don't believe they have ownership on the moral high ground nor, in my opinion, have they cornered the market on truth. I don't like being preached to.
Believe me - if I really wanted to hear about the word - I own a bible - I'd read it. I have friends who are Christian who would be more than happy to answer all my questions. I don't need complete strangers to tell me I'm wrong or to be hateful or condemning toward me because I don't share their beliefs. This is a large part of why I left Christianity in the first place.
And - of course when I'm attacked for having *wrong* beliefs, it's only natural, in most cases, for people like me to counter-attack. I don't run around telling people they're wrong and going to hell. Nor do I try to shove my religion down their throats. I expect the same courtesy.
By the way - a lot of people of minority faiths are great people, too, but that doesn't seem to change the minds of zealot Christians when it comes to us. I belong to a group of Daemonolators, Theistic Satanists, and darker poly/pantheists who do charity fundraisers. In the past we've raised money for Katrina, breast cancer research, the environment, and disabled veterans to name a few. So if we're using that as a qualifyer as to who is a nice person, then you should probably know that people of minority religions and even atheists donate to charity and help others.

Because people misunderstand Christianity. Too many people have been taught that is a condemning religion when really it's a religion of love. People of faith want other people to experience the peace and joy that comes along with the true peace only God can provide. I'm not saying that people who stand in front of clinics are right, but I won't say they're wrong, either. Many of those people had been there themselves at one time and don't want others to experience the pain and suffering associated with certain decisions/actions. And a few fanatics make the whole religion look bad, just as any other group of people.

A Muslim bombs a restaurant, no Muslims denounce it, people say all Muslims support these kinds of actions, A Christian bombs an abortion clinic, no Christians denounce it, people say all Christians support these kinds of actions, in either case all who follow those faiths are condemned by outsiders because of the actions of the few and silence of the many. As a Pagan I am constantly being insulted and reviled by Christians. Then Christians tell me that I should come to their Church and study the same material that the people who are attacking me study. There is a widespread attitude among people who have no background in Christian teaching, they look at the people on the news who claim to be Christians since that is the only Face that is being shown, then basically decide they don't need to drink the contents if it says poison on the label.

I don't hate any Christians. Detest is a better word for me, and it's only felt toward the Evangelical nut jobs who suffer from the delusion of thinking this country is a theocracy. I know many wonderful Christians who don't feel the need to insert their religious mores into my life uninvited. I'll tell you something I'm sure you already know, the fundies are giving you all a very bad name. I'm hoping the way in which you spread your religion is to be a living example of it and not a living megaphone. I'm so fed up I pity the next idiots who ring my doorbell and ask me if I know where I'm going when I die. They're going to be sorry they ever got up that day by the time I'm through with them. Sorry to rant, just really had enough of self-righteous proselytizing to last me the rest of my life.

Well sweetie, it's because you are a Christian, and all Christians are persecuted for their faith. It was told to us in the Word.
In reality, if an atheist met me, they would like me. Why? Because I do not, nor would I ever, judge them in any way. People know that I am a Christian, without my having to tell them. I know for a fact that people tend to be alot more hateful when debating anything over the internet. They don't hate you in particular, but this is the only place they feel they can say what they want, and they tend to go overboard. Alot of atheists are very intelligent, very honest, and generally pleasant to be around. Alot of atheists at one time were scholars of Religious material, and can quote verses quicker than most Christians that I know. If you are a Christian, and you respect people like you are a man or woman of God, people do respect you. But no matter what, you will always have the atheists as well as the troubled Christian making statements that are uncalled for.

Perhaps if instead of spreading your religion you tried to live it you would have more luck. Ppl can relate better to what they see than what they hear and then see something different. I don't doubt that you church has done some nice things but is it necessary for your church to tell ppl about it? Shouldn't the individuals that make up the church be more active in doing good things that show your faith on an individual basis instead of having to do it collectively? This is what we, the others see most of the time, it isn't what we are told about the religion so the two don't match therefore it is hypocritical. Do you understand?

Because theres no distinction between the lame christians and the cool christians. The lame ones are interspersed within the cool ones at every church and denomination.
Also i never hear the Cool christians trying to seperate themselves, or denounce the Lames ones for being so lame.
Im mormon... and let me tell you, no other religion has made such an effort to put me down as much as the suposed "Christians" have.
Seeing as how the Lame and the Good christians all share the same face... there's no other way around it.
I've found that evangelical's are by far the worst though.
There's a good book called "The Mormon doctrine of diety" by B.H. Roberts. It's a discussion about our religion between himself and a Catholic Priest in Idaho. It's good because it gives a very realistic view of how mormons (or any other religion other than orthadox christianity) are treated by the "Christian" community.

You know as well as I do that there are people 'claiming' to be Christians that are not. These are the ones that give Christians a bad name. I cannot tell you the number of times that I've been called an "abortion clinic bomber", "psycho", "child molestor" because of actions of people claiming to be Christians. (Nothing could be farther from the truth- true born-again Christians don't wish harm or hate on anyone). Rather than truly examine what Christianity is about and trying to be open minded and see that there are Christians that try to love as Jesus did, they just cast us off as "blind sheep" or "hypocrites". They want to see Christians as bad, hypocritical people. If you tell yourself something is true long enough, you'll soon start to believe that it is.

I don't hate you, Derek, or any other Christians. Its just that we ALL need to remember its a free country; live and let live. We all have a right to our own beliefs as long as they don't interfere with others or hurt them. Religion of all kinds has caused the world countless amounts of misery for thousands of years now, so for that reason and many others I stay far away from the churches with all their rules, their "shoulds" and their "oughts". Have a nice day!

I disagree with jigglie ... I think Mormons are well respected by the majority of other Christians. He sounds like he's just had some bad experiences.
To answer the question, though, Christians are hated because of their values in an increasingly liberal world. The media loves to bash Christians.
