Redlands - you might as well move to Alabama.
Palm Springs can reach 120 degrees in the summer, and is 1.5 to 2 hours from LA. The place is a ghost town from May until September. Many of the shops etc. close down entirely during this time.
Try Pasadena, Arcadia, Altadena, Monrovia or San Gabriel.
Pasadena would be at the top of my list. Try to stay south of the 210 freeway and west of Lake St.

Corona! I have lived many different places and this is my favorite. Its a small city with all amenties avalible. It's clean, quiet and affordable (in CA standards). It is also close to everything yet far enough away. You can get to LA in about 45 minutes, no traffic of course, San Diego in about an hour, Big Bear (snow) in about an hour to an hour and a half, and Las Vegas in 3 hours. Redlands is too far out. Good luck!

Redlands is nice, but gets very smoggy. Not much shopping there. You might try an inbetween place. Desert Hot springs or San Jacinto/ Hemet area is pretty resonable and close enough to be able to go into LA still for fun. Plus you are kittycorner to Temecula mall and not far to head into San Diego too.

its cheaper when you move out to east part of Los angeles. Yes, Redlands is nice, and area that near by UC Riverside. But i have to warn you that traffic is bad during the rush hours. Palm Springs is quiet and hot during summer. If you like hot weather, quiet life, it would be a good place to live.

We all know downtoan L.A.'s outta the question. My area, Tarzana's really nice. There's some really nice areas on Encino and Ventura. Woodland Hills and West Hills are nice. Palm Springs is nice as well. Kinda quiet for me but the houses and everything are gorgeous. You're better off somewhere there than my place, since it's less than 30 minutes from becoming LA.

I think places close to Los Angeles county is a nice place to live if you get a job here. There are many people and lots of things to do so you will never get bored. However, it is very expensive and in some areas unsafe... If you move to a nice neighborhood (which there are many) you will feel much safer. And the weather is usually nice(especially near the beach areas in Orange County). Enjoy¬

The San Gabriel Valley is reasonably priced, and the freeways give you access to just about anywhere, but you have to watch for the neighborhoods... West Covina, Arcadia, Glendora, Azusa and Pasadena are all nice, but Pasadena is very expensive. Avoid Bassett, Alhambra, El Monte, San Gabriel (the city), and Baldwin Park--or immediate vicinity. Very much infested with gangs. Rowland Heights, La Puente, Walnut, and Industry are borderline, and are heavily Asian (meaning, all the signs are in either Vietnamese, Thai, or Chinese, and very few people speak English--very nice, but hard to get around). We live in a 2br/2ba townhouse in West Covina, and pay $1485/mo rent w/ a dog...

Palm Springs is awesome and more reasonable cost of living. However, you must like the HEAT.
Pomona Valley, Ontario and Upland, Cucomonga areas are also nice and closer in to L.A.

The Pasadena area it's half an hour from the beach. About a hour from Good Skiing. The Rose Bowl is near by. There is good shopping in the area and great bars and restaurants.

Palm Springs is O.K. kind of pricey though, I hope you can stand daytime temps b/t 105 and 120 degrees in the summer. It's not really close to L.A. and too far to commute, if you plan to work around L.A. I live in the mountains north of L.A., warm summers and cool winters, not crowded and plenty of elbow room. Good luck.
