simply walk in and take it.
the police would be afraid to retrive it because of some stupid legend about a curse (which only they belive)

There would be no HOPE after you stole the diamond.
Your chances of the curse being cast on your are real and a 100%, and the police would find you quickly. Despair would follow you all the days of your life, child.
