Wow! This is a great question and some parents should be embarrass. My son is two and my church is planning something for him and his fellow plate mates. Kids around the world are totally confused because of their parents backwards thinking. Too funny and sad at the same time!

Not everyone does this. Many go with the children only to homes of those neighbors that they know and trust. Others have home parties or attend church festivities, etc. With all the happenings these days, I wouldn't let children accept anything from strangers.

Don't you inspect candy before letting the kids consume it??? As a side note, the local hospitals have for years x-rayed candy for free. or a small fee. and not once in thousands of x-rays has a foreign object shown up.

Responsible parents will go out Trick-or-Treating with their children to make sure they only go to houses in their own neighborhood. It's not like they drop their kids off in Times Square!

we don't do it , have a party for the kids instead or only take them to people you know.
We of course live in a small town, about 5000 people, we know about 1/4 of the town so going to people we know is easy

Never been trick or treating in my life, and I'm pretty darn healthy. So that is what I recommend. Wouldn't be surprised with the way this world is going if trick or treating got outlawed for that reason. Can't trust anyone anymore.

Ideally, your neighbors shouldn't be "strangers." And you're with them, and you can check the bag.
