Some last for just a few second, and some can last for a few minutes-it depends on the type of earthquake, and the place. There was just one in Maine, USA last week and it only lasted a few seconds (I was there when it happened), but ones in Califonia can last a lot longer, like the one that happened in the 1900's

Well, you should consider that with a larger quake, say above 5 on the scale, it has the earthquake effect many miles from its point of origination. That means that although at the epicenter it only lasts a few seconds, the effect actually extends over several minutes as the effect ripples out.

Live in CA, so they can last just a few seconds ( a jolt) or a few minutes ( a rolling or wave affect) depending where the earthquake hit ( epicenter).
