White or a light cream, with stained wood trim. That fireplace is a big focal point; you don't want other elements to compete for attention, but rather fade into the background and let the fireplace be the star. Also a plaster texture on the walls will help the brick to blend in with the rest of the room.

Depends what type of look you are going for. Are you trying to make it less of a feature, or more? A color similar- but lighter might make it less obvious, an opposite- light or bold would make it stand out more. If you don't like the fireplace color exactly as is, you can dry brush on complimentary colors to slightly change the brick color- saw it on one of the "while you were out" shows or something. Was a red brick fireplace, and the host streaked on yellow, to more match the yellowish walls.

I say paint it whatever color YOU like looking at! There are some tines that will look better or worse next to the brick coloring, but interior colors are 100% a matter of personal choice.
For instance - I cannot STAND white or Navajo beige walls. YUCK. They always look like rental or like someone had no idea. Whatever you try - know that it is ONLY PAINT. You can always paint over it if you don't like the way it looks. Now you can buy small sample jars of paint and try out a 2' square next to the brick. Live with it a few days to see if you like it before committing to painting the entire wall. And never ever let someone else dictate to you - what YOU should like to live with. It is YOUR House (even f you love Navajo beige walls!!)
That being said I LOVE a nice warm golden tan next to raw brick.

Are you planning to keep the color of the brick red? If so, then use a warm beige tone. Don't use white as it will be too stark. However, if you planned to paint the brick, then that opens up an entirely different world. The colors you can paint the brick are endless!
Good luck!

I think an adobe yellow would be pretty, It is a earthy color and would compliment the red brick. A bright yellow would be too much.
Go to a paint store or WalMart and find several swatches and tape them next to the red brick, that will help make the decision. Happy painting!

Hmmm. I had this same dilemma. I painted the surrounding wall a sage green, with cream crown molding. Then I got an itch to paint the whole fireplace the cream color. It looks amazing. I suggest it. It really modernizes the space and makes it look fresh. Good luck!

You can paint the red brick. Is it the real brick or "faux" brick. Or you can paint the brick wall an accent color, say you paint three walls a suede tan, and the brick wall a tan a few shades darker.
