Good question!
The purpose of the army is to enforce the will of the state when other methods has failed. In their turn they also defend the borders and interests of the state from other nations or groups who would enforce their will upon us by military means.

i think the main perpose is to build character.
in the 1950's it was supposed to make boys into men, i think that the army has come along way it now offers so much to young officers looking for a short term or long term carer in the army. it teaches anger managment and self control.

Their entire purpose is to kill people and break things, as directed by the civilians in charge (The Commander in Chief).
By having an Army capable of this, it makes our enemies less likely to attack us knowing we would respond in kind.

The purpose of the army is to stop your country being envaded by someone else! Also taking other peoples lands and making your country richer by force.
