If you don't believe at all. Then it shouldn't bother you at all what they say.
Religious people are an important resource in our country. The sincere are terrific law-abiding citizens. They are charitable. They make faithful companions. They are trustworthy. They are the caretakers of our traditions and have had a huge influence on the founding of our nation and its desire to do what is right. Religion gives people hope of a better place beyond this mortal life.
Faith is the essence of religion. Some believe. Some don't. It's not something you can prove to someone else. It's something that has to be experienced to understand. I think that when you want to believe, you can believe most anything. Your challenge is to find a way of life that will meet your social and spiritual needs that help you understand and deal with disappointment and provide direction for a successful future.
I think you're right about hell though. I couldn't toss my son into a fiery pit and I doubt a 'heavely father' could either. If there's any truth to it, I'd have to say that the fire is probably symbolic flames of guilt or something like that.
To me, it sounds like your family cares. If they didn't, they wouldn't get so fierce about saving your soul. Most people lean toward agnosticism to leave open the possibility of there being a God. This way you acknowledge your doubt with regard to God, but yet you leave the door open to hope for your parents and family. They don't want to lose you and they're willing to use fear and contention calm their own fears of death and separation from loved ones. You're likely to be separated from them in death (at least in their eyes) because you do not believe. Thus they reason that you have rejected them and need to understand the pain of separation now because when it's over and judgement day arrives the decision is final.

For the most part, I think you're right, and you have every right to be frustrated, especially with what happened with your family.
But you should also know that its very possible (and makes more sense when you study it) to believe in a "God" without having to believe in all the "hell fire" "eternal punishment" and all that stuff. These people have basically just been conditioned to believe in one rigid set of ideas, mainly because a lot of other people believe the same thing.
But not everyone.
Would an infinitely loving God condemn to hell someone who "does not believe?" No. Of course not.
What about all the babies that die before they're 1 years old? What about all the people who lived lives where they did not have access to any kind of religious knowledge? Would God condemn these people simply because they "didn't know"? No. Of course not.
That whole idea is silly and doesn't make logical sense.
Also, there are a lot of people out there who have very good arguments against the very existance of "heaven and hell" as most people know it.
My point is that there are different views and just because one thing may be wrong does not mean the whole idea is wrong.

i got a question in regards to your statement, why is it called a "threat" when people are telling you of "hell" why would you see it as a threat instead of a "warning" that is like saying that someone telling you that a killer tornado is heading your way was threatening you..It is a warning! and I have another question..if you saw your friends house on fire, wouldn't you do something or say something about it? I mean to leave them to burn in the house is wrong, especially when YOU see the fire that they haven't spotted yet. did you ever think that the people who are "threatening you" are actually really concerned and care about you? I don't even know you and I am concerned, not like I have anything to gain by telling you so but You might want to rethink your stand. Yes your family is wrong and usually it is the other way around it is the believe who is usually rejected.

COMPLETELY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID!!!!!!! I don't like the fact that people think its okay to push their beliefs on you and such. ALSO! Thats f-d up that your family has disowned you or has stopped communicating with you becasue of something that you believe. If you love someone, you should love all of them, from their preferences, to their beliefs, to their actions...everything. And people talk about religious tolerance! HA! If I ever meet a religious person who is tolerant of other religions and even people of different backgrounds, I'll $hit myself. The rarity of it all is absolutely crazy. I hate people like this. And about forgiving religious people?? Forget it!!
People who are insecure in who they are and how they treat people...those who are scared of life and living and who are terrified that thay aren't good people and need the constant validation that 'someone' loves them no matter what they do...thats who needs religion. And in some cases, religion actually DOES make a person be the best they can be and be a good person...and in those cases, I say more power to them. BUT......others just use it to push their ideas on others so that they can always be right in their eyes.
I'm sorry your family is narrow-minded enough to disown an obviously intelligent and good person such as yourself. Ever hear that intelligence is a curse? Yeah, well I think that in this particular case of yours, it just may be true.

This Reminds me of a Commercial I saw Years ago:
The girl comes home and has got one in the Oven, her Dad tells her to Get Out!----If you don't help your own Family, your Worse than an Infidel.
You have the Right to Believe Anything you want to.
GOD Almighty will Uphold that Right and Will Not Force Anyone to Believe in HIM.
Sometimes, people get Religious---and sometimes that makes them do Stupid Things and Act Funny(you know what I mean.)
May GOD Bless You (even though you don't Believe in HIM) and Give you Strength to Forgive your Family for acting like----Oooppps--I think my Computer ran out of Ink--is that Possible, the screens going bl--=]['

This subject is obviously affecting you or else you wouldn't bother with this question.
Religious people can make you feel so guilty and push the fact that you live your life differently is going to cause bad consequences in your life.
That is not practising a religion.
I have learnt to tolerate them, I won't last one second with someone who is trying to jam their religion down my throat.
I am happy living my life not hurting anyone and treating others the way I would like to be treated. I help those I can help and listen to those who have a problem to unload.
I feel I am no different than them even thought I don't practise a religion.
Just get on with your life as you want to live it and if you are happy that way then don't worry about what others say.
Sometimes these people are so wrapped up in their religion they forget to practise the good they may have learnt from it.
I also must add that I am not including everyone who practises religion in this mould, just some.
I have a lot of friends who are religious without jamming it down my throat and they are very nice people who don't judge me because I don't practise a religion.

I agree. I don't know how they can threaten everyone who disagrees with eternal suffering. If I ever told someone, "You're going to burn in a lake of fire," I'd probably feel pretty bad about it later on.
Don't worry, though. If the fundamentalists are speaking the truth and Hell really does exist, you'll meet up with a lot of cool people down there. Albert Einstein, most of the Founding Fathers, Abe Lincoln, Napoleon, Mark Twain, Van Gogh... the list goes on. I'm destined for Hell too, apparently, but considering the kind of company there must be down there, it probably isn't too bad.

A friend of mine and I were talking about how so many Christians were complaining that they were being persecuted because non-believers argue with them and won't let them have their way (via agreement or by converting the non-believers). I think Christians (or people of Abrahamic religions in general) forget that non-believers (whether theist or atheist) have been persecuted for centuries for not believing. It's only been recently that we've had the freedom to have a dissenting opinion, which means it's only been recently that they've had to deal with dissenting opinion. Basically - IMO it's just a temper tantrum.

Don't like religion!! No ones religion!! When I remind those Christians that it's evil to worship something, that loves the smell of burning flesh, (Leviticus) is going to put people in a burning lake of fire they all of a sudden don't discuss religion. When they give me their freedom of choice speech. I remind them that their god hardened the heart of the Pharaoh (Exodus) many times denying him freedom of choice then used the Pharaohs actions to put plagues on people. Forced the guy to do something and then punish everyone else for his actions. Real nice god they worship!! They didn't have radio TV or newspapers.

A true christian knows that you can't force someone to believe. They have to want to believe. But a true christain will also know it is their duty as christians to spread God's word to anyone, regardless of beliefs. Some people just don't want to believe, and that is ok, because God gave us all free will and the ability to think and choose for ourselves. Not all people who claim to be christians are truly christians. They give the ones who are a bad rep and make all non believers think that based on a few imposters, ALL religious people are bad and ALL religious people will force you to think like they do. DOn't believe it. You want to find the truth for yourself? Read the Bible. Choose for yourself to believe it or not. I pray to God you believe.
