All they are trying to do is get you your food, refills, whatever you need, when you need it, and yet some people are so rude in return. Yeah, sometimes they are busy but you can tell when that is the case. If they are nice to you and do their job, why would you just treat them like crap?

Because they thave never ever worked in the service industry. I'm sure after working just one dinner service they would have a completely different attitude. They also don't realize that the nicer you are to them the better wservice they will get. TReat us like crap and it will take forever for me to fill your water glass.

I am a server and I have asked the same question every day. I have found that people believe that servers are second class citizens. I have been waiting tables for over 20 years ands don't get me wrong I have had really great customers but in the long run I have had customers that no matter how hard I try they are just mean. They run you crazy complain about everything and don't tip worth crap. It is like they think that I am their slave. No matter how good the service is they find something to complain about. If they had a bad day they take it out on us, if they are just crabby that day they take it out on us. I have asked some customers why they do that and they just respond that we are there to serve them no matter what. To make their experience enjoyable. But how can we do that if they aren't willing to let us. Being a server I always try and go the extra mile for my customers and sometimes that can be very hard to do. I try to treat everyone with respect and dignity and I know that I deserve the same. What ever happened to the Golden Rule?? Please try and remember that if you had a bad day it wasn't me who did it. If you are angry I am not the one who made you that way. If your life sucks please don't take it out on me I didn't do it. If you cannot treat people the way that you want to be treated then you should stay at home or go to McDonalds where you serve yourself. Thank-you for asking this question. I am glad I had the chance to speak out.

I agree with everyone here but have another opinion also. Some people have had bad experiences with their servers on many occasions. This can cause a person to be very specific on an order and make them extra cranky when one little thing happens wrong. I was a server for 8 years and have had this very problem many times. I have also gone to one restaurant that is my favorite, they have a very high turn around so they don't get trained right which means most everything goes wrong except the cooking. Learn about where you eat and how experienced the person is before you decide to have an attitude please!

Not only have they probably never been in the service industry, but they are the ones who have probably never even had to deal with the public at all.
Most of the "jerks" just don't get it, or just don't care to.
I have learned through experience that if someone is an idiot to me, then they get to wait a little longer for what they need.
All the while watching me help those seated closest to them.
I have the power, NOT them. They are at MY mercy to a certain point. I have it down to a science after 20 years. And I have never been complained about to a manager.
And those type of people only tip so well anyway, so why waste the time on them?

I dunno. I tend to treat those people with the greatest amount of courtesy because they are getting my food. I don't want anything 'extra' in my food if you know what I mean. But if I have a crappy server or one that acts like I should be happy she is helping me I do get a little impatient. You get what you give...but usally with servers I don't see that to much most are very nice!!

Why though? I think because ppl don't think they are getting the attention they deserve. Usually these ppls are just @ssholes everywhere in there life and add being hungry to the factor then they are major jerks. This culture is very me me me and no one else I see it everyday ppl running stop signs, or pulling out in front of you these are the same ppl just sitting at a resturant and the whole world needs to move outta their way because they are so SELF important.

I dont know if ur a server, but I was at HIgh tops in chi town. people are rude because face it......some servers don't care. they usually bring there attitude w/ them to work.......so, if there having a good day......they treat you good......they had a bad day, and, it shows. that or there too busy, have other things on there mind, dont check **** before it hits the table and numerous other things. I dont think all servers get treated like crap.....plus, what kind of day has the customer had? did he lose a big proposal? did her husband leave her? ect....you get the point. what part of chicago r u from? Im 20 min. from ohare.

Alot of customers don't "see" the server as a real person doing meaningful work. These people consider the work to be menial, without much need of any skills or intelligence.

Also, and more true to the point, I have found that most customers feel out of their comfort zone in a fine-dining restaurant. They just do not know how to act themselves and feel totally out of place. I don't think that they really intend to snub the server, it's just that they freeze up in social situations, and, not knowing what or how to act (thinking that there ought to be some protocol to follow), don't talk. They appear to be "stuck up", when, in reality, they are extremely uncomfortable in a situation which requires something of them that they simply don't have.

The interesting dynamic is that most servers, in turn, not realizing all this, become aloof and cold themselves. The customers pick up on this and really con't care to warm up to them either. It can become a "viscious cycle."

Human nature really is amazing....

Some people are just jerks! They are the people who've never worked in the service industry and have no idea what it's like. "How hard is it to bring me extra napkins?" Well Sir, when I've got 20 other people who want things too, it may take a few minutes. These are the same people who are cruel to animals. Ladies, if you're ever on a date with a guy who is mean to the server, dump him!!!

i was a server and know what it is like to be treated like crap mostly cause the customer was so impatient and thought i had four arms and could do four things at once mainly they think that they are paying for food they should be mean to the servers but they have no right to treat people that way

There is no GOOD reason why. I don't think people should mistreat anyone? Most food servers work for minimum wage plus percentage of tips so they are usually extremely nice if for no other reason, to get a good tip. People that are rude to them should be asked not to come back after paying for their meal. Don't you agree?
