Aspiration is very possible, especially in the elderly, as some times they can't cough hard enough to get this food or liquid up. they often get pneumonia, which can be very serious.

Yes it is possible. Because the tube by which both food and air pass through in the initial stages through the same pipe before going to their respective destinations, it is possible. It can happen either by our esophagus closing up, thus allowing food to pass through the windpipe and ending up in the lungs, or by any of the other numerous methods. If you have a hole where the air would normally pass through, then it is possible that food can drop inside.

The consequences can be just mild to severe coughing, as the body tries to get rid of the foreign objects. If this coughing or the irritation in the lungs continue, this can develop into pneumonia or something else. You will probably know if you experience some weird symptoms in your lungs or in regards to your respiratory system, or by visiting the doctor.

Yes. But it's not really dropped, it can be inhaled. It's called aspiration. This is why you cough, because it "went down the wrong pipe". The worst consequence to this is more than likely aspiration pneumonia which can be treated with antibiotics.

If accidentally inhaled, food gets stuck in the trachea and you will cough and choke till it is expelled. That is a protection against food getting into the lungs.

Food or fluid getting into your bronchial passage or lung is called "aspiration" and if it happens, you will know right away. It is very uncomfortable. People with neurologic problems, who can't swallow properly, get this a lot.

It can cause choking, and if the food/fluid remains in the bronchial airway for awhile, an infection and/or pneumonia may result.
