Some states have a "common law" that states a couple who have lived together for 5 or 7 years are considered legally married. In these cases, the couple has the same rights as a legally married couple.

Pros: Keep finances separate; less legal entanglements if the relationship ends
Cons: Difficult to get health and life benefits for each other if not married

My mom and step dad have been together for almost 17 years now and have never married. They don't care to get married mostly because they have a preconceived notion (I'm not sure if that's the wording I'm looking for) of how a married couple are supposed to act and they don't want to fall into old habits. They are happy and they feel that by getting married it may change something. At least that's the way I understand it to be.

Well, marriage anymore is just a legal thing and a tax break in my opinion.

Pros: No pressure of feeling trapped, or the stigma that comes with marriage.
If you dont like jewelry, there ya go.
Keep your last names.. (Can do that anyway if your married)

Cons: ?????

It all depends on the people involved. If your happy, then dont let outside sources tell you that you cant be happy unless your married.

Hope this helps

You'll get dinged with "Common Law" after 6 months.

Same as marriage almost, with less fine print.
