Unfortunately, both. Religion has both positive and negative aspects. It has inspired, and continues to inspire, great acts of generosity, courage, and kindness as well as horrific acts of intolerance, elitist bigotry, and violence. A person under the influence of his religious beliefs is literally capable of donating a kidney to a complete stranger one day and throwing his own child into the street the very next because that child reveals to him that he or she is homosexual, or has chosen a different faith, or wants to attend a church of a different denomination down the street.

BOTH. Relgion, like everything else in life, has good or ill effect based on those who use them. In ancient times, religion was the glue that held tribes together, a role it stil plays today. Yet people have also turned religious belief into a reason to hate.

In the realm of we mere mortals, there are no absolutes. If you want to talk about something absolutely good or evil, you'll have to talk a little more personally with God - no one here is qualified to answer.

Dear ltxtinman,

It depends on the religion. All religion at its core is man's attempt to reach God. Many religions think the way to reach God is by being a "good person" and in this way religion can help individuals to be "good" in accordance to human standards.

Religion based on the Bible, teaches man how to live in a way that pleases God based on waht God has shown to be good. The Bible teaches that man has two responsibilities: To Love God and to Love others, so in that sense i would say that Christianity can not help our fellow man- but it helps us to know the true and living God.

Religion in general able to help society- sure. About to help people to know God- only if it's based on what God has said- which is found in the Bible.

Hope that helps,

Nickster

A Good religion is a source for good.
An Evil religion is a source for evil.

Take Buddhism as an example, it's an evil religion. To sacrifice some food, meat for ancestors is part of religious doctrine. What a silly doctrine.

Good and evil exist within the heart of every man, woman, and child.
Religion is not the source of it.

if religion helps people live their lives and gives them some good feeling and security in thought then that can only be a good thing, but as in all walks of life theire is good and bad, religion itself is not bad, but some of the people that espouse its views can be bad.

more often than not the religion has very little to do with peoples views when it used for wrongdoing. but unfortueatly, anyone who finds them self to be the outsider due to anything including religion will be looked at with suspicion.

hope this makes sense, know what i wanted to write but couldnt word it as i am very tired, but cant sleep

Atheists have murdered more people in the first 75 years of the 20th century then all the religions in all the world throughout the history of the human race combined. Sounds like the math answers the question in favor of relgion.

i definately do NOT think it increases good will to our fellow man... considering ALL THE WARS caused by religious disagreements and beliefs...religion has killed more people than the government has! for some reason...it is ok to kill in the name of god, yet according to god we are all one and loved by him...why then does he condem only a certain few who have a mind of their own?
