Islam is not synonymous with violence. Islam has a lot of good things. But the fact that Islam does not instill violent feelings in the mind of followers may not be agreeable. At the end of the day it is all about what one chooses to believe.
Not all Muslims choose violent path. I have a number of Muslim friends who are better than my other friends. I like their company and Islamic food, language, rituals etc. You can site examples of Muslims who dont believe in violence e.g Indian president Abdul Kalam Azaad. Cricketers and other sportsmen e.g. Izmam ul Haq, Zheer khan. Cinema personalities Shahrukh khan, Amir khan. I thinking frequently citing a number of popular names help, the person might relate to one of the popular personalities and in turn can relate to muslims in general.

Speak out against intolerance, terrorism, and violence. Be strikingly upright and a lighthouse to your fellow human beings. Encourage other Muslims to join you in working alongside peoples of other faiths and moral philosophies to do good in the community. Let others get to know you and see, by the examples you set, what Islam teaches.

start by taking a public stand against violence in the name of islam. don't let radical voices be the only ones. then get other muslims to do the same. there are billions of muslims, right? if they mostly agree with you, then the moderate and peaceful muslims should be able to overwhelm the radicals. so far, this hasn't happened.

You just began! By expressing your desire for peace, tolerance and understanding about the muslim people and faith you have clearly proved that Islam does not mean violence. PEACE!
But opinion changes all the time, in the 20th century the threat was largely Communism, it changes.

Most intelligent people can distinguish between the radical Islamist and the true Islamist. Those who choose to jump on the prejudice band wagon will attempt to pervert the truth, but you need not worry about them. They are a minority, just as the radical Islamist is a minority among Muslims. God bless you and bring you peace.

As I read the history of Islam, it was founded and spread by war and imperialism. Most of its early converts were converted in front of the barrel of a cannon, or at the point of a sword.
A good place to start is to accept scholarly criticism of the Qu'ran and the claims of Islam itself.
