Most people dont know when someone is self harming. But in cases that they do then yes... of course. Help is obviously needed even theough it feels like they dont need it.

I stopped my self harming because I wanted to. If someone had tried to force me I probably would have maimed myself significantly more in protest.
Also isn't smoking and drinking a kind of self harm? I did a lot more long term damage to myself as an alcoholic than I did cutting my body up.
I think making someone get help for something they don't see as a problem is not a morally acceptable thing to do in this day and age.

no
as a ex self harmer when you make someone get help it can make things worse
there are other ways it can be controlled when a person self harms its like a safe place for a minute or two
people need a safe place comfort zone so they can express there feelings and to feel a bit of relief
if a person wanted to stop they could try a number of things the best one is a diary you can scream shout cry write anything and everything and no one can here them (a safe place)

Yes....people who self harm do it, because they feel in control
at that present time..
these people are unable to control every day situations in there lives so they deal with situations quite diffirently, they should be made to get help as i beleive it is a mental condition.

i don't think anyone can be "made" to get help. I think if there is someone you are concerned about you can be there to help them get professional help by understanding their pain. I think that alof of SI people have so much pain they can't verbalize and the only way to vent is to lash out at themselves. From the SI's I know they are so angry alot of the time... usually with themselves because they feel they have failed themselves or someone they really care about. So, it is vital that they do not feel pressured to get help or judged about their behaviors.

As a woman who has been this way for 20+ years there is no easy way to seek help. Luckily I think it is much easier for people to get the support now a days. When I was growing up I would have been told I was suicidal... but I can reassure you that I am not in the least bit... it's just a pit of hell that resides in us that can only be released in a bright red scream. (at least that is our thinking in the impulsive moments)

Exactly. But when you force someone to stop doing something they don't want to stop doing---they will just keep right on doing it. They have to want to REALLY stop.
