Re: Dakarfarmer... this guy/gal is from the UK, so prices in pounds please. If you hadn't noticed, they've put up a block of about 5 similar questions - either they're endearingly naive and are wondering whether to buy a WP or a typewriter, or they've got some kind of school/college project on the neverending march of technology going down and are too young to have experienced the wirling mass of metal rods that is a writing iron.

Anyway... to my fourth and final very long winded answer of the day!

As you might have guessed so far, the price is very variable, and you can't really give a proper "average" or single price. As a rule of thumb, you can get a commercial WP for about £80-100 in the high street shops, very very cheap (a few pounds) or totally free - and legal! - online, or somewhere in between if you shop around or go secondhand.

In detail

Free (zero pounds zero pence):
Windows Wordpad (or notepad if you're desperate / are using the Vista RC2 beta) --- which is essentially a feature limited version of the full-on MS Word v6 / Word 95.
Windows Write (if you're oldschool - though seemingly basic, both this and wordpad TOTALLY count as genuine modern word processors, despite Write being at least 13 years old now... all the important core features are there)
Whatever the apple / linux equivalents are
OpenOffice
Papyrus
Anything relatively legit you find being given away anywhere.
Anything you steal from teh intarweb \/\/ar3z!!!!111

Very Cheap (£25 and under):
Old copies of Office or Works from eBay / classifieds etc
An old computer with word processing software on, bought in it's entirety
A secondhand dedicated wordprocessor, if the seller hasn't got it in their head that it's a collectable item. EG Amstrad PCW9128 / PCW16, Amstrad WP100/200 portables, Brother Screenwriter...

Cheap (about £25-50):
New copy of Microsoft Works
Certain rival products That Shall Not Be Named (as I don't know them, only that they surely exist even in MS's software monocracy)
Slightly better secondhand PC, with a full, more recent office suite :-)

Affordable (about £50-100):
Microsoft Office 2003 student/teacher edition (£90 - word, excel, powerpoint, outlook... you have to be a teacher or student, or be related to one, though.. i was both :)
Microsoft Word on it's own (£90, someone said?)
Adobe Acrobat (PDF) official creation tools?

Flamin' expensive (£100 and far beyond):
Various more commercial flavours of Office, from probably £150 to certainly well over £300.
Multi-user and site licenses of MS Word (cheaper per-person, though)
Professional journalistic and specialised WP softwares
Desktop publishing apps, e.g. Pageplus, MS Publisher, QuarkXpress.

What country are you in? This is the web so if you can't be bothered telling anyone, nobody going to bother answering you. In Asian countries, generally you can't buy legit software, it doesn't exist. It's all ripped-off thanks to Microsoft's brilliant idea of saving money by going to cheap labour countries to produce their software. Try your local shop, you will find it quicker
