Let's see, I've heard, "I don't want to risk this great friendship."

"I don't think it would work. It's not you, it's me."

"I'm not ready for a relationship."

Even, "Why would you want to date me? You're such a great guy. You deserve better."

Anything here help? You could even mix and match, a la:

I'm not ready for a relationship and you deserve someone who can commit to you.

cannot believe the other answers- don't lie to your friend! it wld be really hurtful. Saying 'not right now' if u know you probably won't be interested in the future is really misleading and could end up damaging your friend. Also the stuff about not wanting to damage the friendship is a terrible thing to say- incredibly insincere if you really think about it. your friendship is doomed anyway, you can't be friends with someone who is falling in love with you- so there's nothing to lose by being more than friends.... Saying your not ready for a relationship if you actually would be if the right person came along is another bad lie- again it could end hurting your friend even more in the long run and you would be partly responsible for that. Just be honest and tell the person that you don't feel the same way about them. the more you add to it the worse it will be so just tell the truth- that's the kindest thing you can do

well the easiest and kindest way that i have felt is helpful, is to simply say "I'm not ready for a relatioship right now" or "i just got out of a relationship, and i'm not ready to jump right in another, but we can still continue being friend as we've been"

There is no way to be kind cause his feelings are going to get crushed regardless how you put it. So, just tell him a flat out No and tell him it is hard for you to explain why other than the fact that you two don't meld beyond platonic friendship.

No, I just love being your friend more than anything else in the world. Good friends are like diamonds, rare and valuable. Lets keep what we have.

Just say
"I just want to be friends. I really like you as a friend, but I think being more than friends might wreck our friendship"

Say I don't know let me think about it, or I like you more as a friend, or say that you are special for me but not in that way.

Say:

I like you, but only as a friend. I think that a more serious relationship would take away from that, and I don't think we have enough in common to be more than friends....sorry.

perhaps something like "I understand your offer, but I'm not really looking to be more than friends right now" or "I value our friendship too much to risk it being ruined by something more." May sound stupid, but they are honest answers.

Say,"I think of you as the great friend, and I'm sorry but I don't see us being more than just friends". Look apologetic. :-)
