Sometimes tossing bible verses at someone who has suffered a loss can anger them, and perhaps, turn them a bit FROM God. Let God work through you, be there for them, help share thier suffering, help them enjoy life even through this desperate hour.

If the family member was a Christian, I would highly recommend 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Well, if they are not bible people (and even if they are), try "I know it's really hard right now, I'm hear to listen or just be quietly with you if you need me."
