Yeah - sometimes I like to mess with their heads .... when they say thank-you Mrs. Rush. I say, "Who????" "Who did you just call me???" It will probably freak them out - because they have already put your check up and closed the register, so they won't be for sure. And - they won't be able to open the register back up to take another look.
It freaks them every time. Try it.

I can understand how you feel. You see shopping as business and not friendship and you feel that clerks are becoming too familiar when they use your name.
Some might argue that in the impersonal world of business transactions, a little personal touch is welcome.
I have never really thought about it. While I am not offended by it particularly, I dont like business intrusions into my private life either. But as someone else wrote, some friendliness is better than grumpy unpleasant clerks.

Wow, I never thought about that before, but I guess I can see your point. I never really minded it, though... I kind of like that personal touch.
What I thought your question was going to say, when I clicked on it was....
"Is anyone else annoyed when cashiers don't even look at you, much less talk to you, when they are taking your money... but instead carry on a conversation with the other cashiers... acting like you are invisible?"
That annoys me a LOT more than being addressed by my name. Many times, I would prefer they would take the time to treat me like a human being.
Too many cashiers treat their customers like they think we are nothing but an ATM.

If anything, I want to be called "ma'am". Not hear someone pronounce my last name wrong (they always do) or stuble as they address me with my first initial. They don't do that often, though (especially since moving to the east coast)!
Usually they just call me ma'am and I like that.
If you don't have a really obnoxious last name, you should shop a those places with your ATM card (or find out your credit card's PIN) so that all you have to do is enter numbers...

I don't know. Since we are on courtesy and service to customers. I hate when people at work call you like bill collectors and they raise the pitch of their voice to sound friendly. They only sound fake to me. Then when they get off the phone they talk in their normal lower tone voice. Ever noticed that? I was in the electricity company in Clarksville, Tennessee and this lady answered the phone all prim and proper. I was like fake b*tch! Talk to her in the tone you'd normally speak. Society is so fake and what they teach us to be.

I'M A VERY PRIVATE PERSON, LIKE YOU, BUT DO NOT MIND IT BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOB. CORPORATE HEADS THINK THAT BY GETTING TO YOU ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, YOU WILL FEEL MORE WELCOMED AND COMFORTABLE, THEREFORE SPENDING MORE MONEY. I CAN'T REALLY THINK OF ANYWAY AROUND IT. I JUST ACCEPT IT. MOST OF THE TIME I'M GREATFUL THAT THE PERSON BEHIND THE COUNTER WAS NICE AND COURTEOUS TO ME, NOT RUDE AND MEAN, ACTING LIKE SHE'S PAYING ME TO SHOP THERE. IT'S VERY HARD TO FIND FRIENDLY, EFFICIENT SERVICE ANYWHERE.

I hate it too. I would be more impressed with a cashier that can count my change back. They just hand back a fist full of coins on top of a wad of bills. I drop it because I can not pocket the coins and then fold my bills.

They say that??????? Really?!? Where and on what planet?? I'm from Brooklyn and they NEVER say that. Maybe I'll get a "thank-you" after I say, thank-you but that's it. It would be nice for them to say that, I think, and it makes the business look professional and friendly but maybe without the last name part.

They are trying hard to put on a friendly, attractive face. I prefer that to grumpiness. It does not impress me that they can say my name when they've just looked at my credit card. I would be impressed if they said 'Why, hello Mr. ________ ' when they saw me approaching the counter! But while being unimpressed, I still appreciate that they are at least trying to appear friendly.
I notice they have their first names on a tag on their clothes. I've never dared to say 'Thank you Sue' - don't know if it would be appreciated or not!
