Excellent question!

It has been my experience that you should not jump in too deep all at once. Generally, most Christians I know might fast once a week, if that often, and they will skip breakfast and lunch, and eat a sensible dinner. That fast would be 24 hours. During the fast, drink plenty of water, so you don't become dehydrated.

Some are called to fast for longer periods of time. Perhaps your pastor feels that a two or three fast might be in order for the faithful. Follow the same guidelines.

Fasting is not always about food, either. Perhaps you enjoy television, or have a special time carved out for hobbies, etc. A fast from those activities instead of food might be just what you need.

During the fast, pray whenever you would normally eat, or indulge in whatever you are fasting from. Read the Word as well. Seek God's will and guidance.

Fasting brings you in line to hear Him better. It doesn't motivate Him to act, per se, but does allow you to get in a place of listening.

Dear All Glory,

start slowly and build up to it. There are times where i will fast one meal a day for a week.

For first timers i usually suggest fasting on a Saturday or Sunday (a day where you are not running around with a lot of responsibilities) and surrounded by food or social situations (ie: work birthdays, etc.) where you have to reveal to others that you are fasting- the Word tells us to not show off that we are fasting.

For the youth group i lead - we do an annual 30 hour fast to raise awareness of world hunger- and we drink juice and this helps give us energy and we also pray and stay in a safe environment.

You can also try just fasting meat or carbs, tv, etc.

Hope that helps...

There are many different kinds of fasts... You can fast from taking meat... or fast from sugar... or fast from solid foods, or have a water only fast... or even a total fast. But cautions must be taken with any fast. Your physical health should be assessed by a physician. You should begin your fast slowly... gradually... and end it the same way. Fasts should never include sodas or cafinated drinks including coffee or tea. A total fast should never exceed 3 days. A liquid fast should never exceed 10 days. Moderation is important. Activity should be limited during a fast. Spend the time you would be eating in prayer. Bill Bright put out a little booklet on fasting... I highly recommend it.

load up on proteins for days before -- no carbs. and drink lots of water right before hand. i know this sounds counter intuitive, but it works. carbs leave your body and create hunger.
