Not all mother-in- laws are hypocrites. Those that do not have a conscience and love other persons children are really hyprocrites. There are some that are really really loving and would take their step daughter or son as their own. They see that child as theirs. If you are a mother-in-law, you need to allow that child to get to know you. In that, try to build a relationship with the child. make sure that you treat the child as if he or she was yours. Seek to create an environment that the child can be confident in you seing you as afriend whom he or she can freely talk to and express themself.
Whenever you win the confidence of the child, ensure that you guard what the child tells you, making sure you do not share the information with any one else. Doing this could break the trust. therefore causing the child to beome withdrawnn.
To treat the child as a mother , you can socialize with the child by going to the mall together. helping the child with his or her home work.
Some people may be a stereotype to say that all mother-in-law are hypocrites but you can prove that to be wrong.
Not only that do now make beseen as though you are trying to take away the father from the child. Allow the child to spend time with the father without you interupting them.
If you have a child with the man do not treat that child above the other one. try as best as possible to be fair in your approach to them. Some mothers will treat the other better thatn teh other one. in case of punishment, give the same punishment to all.

Depends on the mother in law. I know my mom won't say anything behind my husbands back that she won't say to his face and the two of them have a great relationship. His mother however is bad about talking about me and her sons in law behind our backs. My first mother in law was awesome and I still go out to lunch with her whenever she is in town, she was like a second mom to me. I just hope that when my kids are old enough to get married I can respect their spouse even if I don't like them!

my parents love my husband so he has not much to complain about there. however my mother in law hates my guts and has let me know so for the last 8 years. best advice is just to be nice and ignore the bad stuff. sje may get on your nervesbut she is your husbands mother and getting on the wrong side of her is not going to help things at all.

I'm one of the lucky ones as I had a fantastic mother-in-law, she had a terrific sense of humour, was extremely generous and I loved her to bits, still miss her terribly, my mom was great to my hubby and I know he had a fantastic mother-in-law in my mom.

Why are you singling out mothers-in law? I love my son-in-law and my daughter, and I have enough respect for them both to not just drop in un-announced, and I don't offer any un-solicited advice. I know my daughter well enough to know if she just needs to talk to someone, or if she really needs my input.

Not all are... It all depends on what kind of a relationship you have. My EX-MIL was a B!&£$ interfering and never left us alone. But then my new MIL to be is the best anyone could have ever asked for. I think it's all about how there were treated when they got married... the "what happened to me will happen to you" theory..
