In my hometown in southern middle Tennessee we have\a wonderful recreation center with a large wooded area and a walking trail. A few years ago, the entire community was invited to build a big playhouse type structure for the children of the community. Businesses donated material, and many people showed up on a spring weekend and built it. It has tunnels, slides, various levels, ladders, and turrets, and is beautiful. Each person that worked on it or donated had their name burned into a wooden stake and these were attached all around the outside of the structure. It's known as the Exploration Station and is a great shady place for children to play. It's in the middle of the oval walking trail and there are picnic tables and benches for parents placed nearby. The project was a huge success and people of all ages helped make it so.

Volunteer at a local hospital. I was a "candy striper" (teen volunteer) during the summer before my senior year of high school to get my 75 hours of community service. It was really fun and rewarding. Hospitals are usually very accommodating when it comes to what hours you would like to volunteer for as well as what area you would like to work in. I spent most of my time in the postpartum unit. I helped the nurses take care of the women who had just given birth. My time there helped me to decide what career field I wanted to go into after graduation. I'm now going to collage to become a labor and delivery nurse.

The Red Cross, Heal The Bay (if that's possible), any libraries, after school programs (like tutoring), animal shelters...there are lots. Usually the city you live in has a website where you can get a whole list of community service options for teens. Try searching for it on google.

That doesn't always work. Forcing somebody to do something can cause a backlash, even if it is telling them to do something they like. After all, community service is used as a form of punishment by the court system. Maybe there are some cold case files to put in order.

It depends on where they are but if it's somewhere that's run down, I'd suggest a 'clean up' of the area's green spots. We did a few weeks ago in Sheffield and it's really fun (hard work though). Alternatively, something rewarding like getting them to help out in a homeless shelter would open their eyes and do something to help those in need.

To make a helpful service needed is to rob the act of service of its benefit. It ceases being an relaxing present to others, and starts off becoming a chore. It loses which potential.

I would recommend volunteering at a local children's hospital. It is extremely rewarding and you are offering a great service to your community. If there isn't a local children's hospital, try any hospital or elder residency in your community.
