i have a plasma tv, its not HD but an EDTV. Do that quality in component cables really affect picture quality? For example, are the more expensive moster cables with the gold tips better than the ones i bought for 20 dollars with non-gold tips?

Gold plated tips have not be scientifically proven to improve quality. Gold RCA Inputs on the other hand have but if you don't have an HDTV more than likely you don't have gold inputs so there's no value to very expensive cables.

What would help is the shielding of the cables. Cheep cables have cheep plastic arround them and any electrostatic signal arround that cable is going to interfer with the signal.
Check out straight-wire they are better than Monster (monster lost some of it's quality a few years back) and cheeper. They have 3 grades go with the lowest for now it will have decent shielding.

If you are saying you have plain component cables and you wanna know if it is worth it to invest in the component cables that have gold tips, my answer would be no. No need to fork over that money for a very minimal if any improvement, especially when you don't even have full HD.

Yeah get the monster cable with the gold tips. Mine were costly but i had them for 4 years and no problems yet. I have a lifetime warranty too.

No. not in anyway your going to be able to tell on a EDTV. Like putting $200 z rated tires on a honda civic.

Generally, yes, better cables provide a better picture. However, you are unlikely to notice much of a difference. Gold-plated tips do not corrode and provide better conductivity.

I would suggest s-video and optical cables instead of coaxial connections.
