Student A was talking to student B about how they act cocky and like a dick about student C, so student A asked student B to say something to them about it, so when student C walked back into the class room and to there seat student B told student C that student A thaught he acted cocky and like a dick to people. The teacher heard student B say dick and gave him a detention for it. (these are all 12th graders and 17 to 18 years old)

Remember there are ethics in every situation. I doubt that the teacher assigned you to detention because the word dick was uttered. There was detention assessed because the word is inappropriate, in the atmosphere it was used in. If you can follow what I am saying then you wont need this next sentence for clarification. You wont call someone who is disabled a cripple, no, you call them mobility challenged. There should be other adjectives in your vocabulary besides dick, that better describes your classmate. Yes, you are in high school, so your vanacular fortitute should reflect this. Not some sophmoric slang that makes you appear juvenile. PEACE!

Im a high school teacher and it all depends on the teacher i guess. Im young and a little easy going so i probably wouldnt have given a detention. But you have to understand 2 things. First, you need to learn some things are innappropriate at some times. I would never go to my boss and say another teacher was acting like a dick to me. Its just inappropriate. And second, the older teachers get, the more different things are from when they were teenagers and the more things they see as wrong. Im only 25 and some things I see kids do/ say, I cant believe b/c when I was younger, we didnt do/ say that. I think the older you get, the worse that gets. Youll see when your older.

Is there a question here?

If you're asking whether detention is appropriate for the word "dick," then none of us would know because it depends on the rules of the particular school.

If all the students had been advised of the rules, and then broke one of the rules, then punishment was appropriate.

Personally I don't think detention should be warranted, but that's a school policy issue, not something that can be argued across school contexts.

If you are so grown up why is student B talking for student A and why would you do it in a school setting. If they act like a child treat them like a child. Once you get into the real world there are proper ways to behave It is sad that at 17 or 18 they don't know better

Yep, still inappropriate in the classroom. The english language has so many words to cover that idea that won't get anybody detention, a dictionary or a thesaurus would have kept him out of trouble. He's now also a sucker for doing what he's told, and getting in the middle of a situation that A and C should have dealt with themselves.
