I was raised Catholic, and to be honest, I felt like many priests efforts were all about self. This is what I felt even as a child. I didn't really think, gee, how cool that they are giving up their lives to serve God. They seemed to be all show and not terribly spiritual. Now, as a "protestant" I see Pastors in the same predicament. So, after years of your priest living the priest life for himself he may have seen himself as a fraud and possibly, if you are really right, given up on God as well as himself.

Dear Mr. Eye,

It is not your fault that he became an alcoholic atheist.

I myself am an alcoholic Atheist, athough I have not had a drink in a while.

this stems from childhood trauma, and the unwillingness to deal with ones problems. Alcohol numbs the mind, and therefore represses ones feelings.

This poor man may only be trying to repress his feelings (knowingly) and I suggest that you give him another visit and see how he is doing.

Maybe, you may want to refer him to A.A. There is a solution for these types of cases with A.A.

Yours,
Perry

After hearing your confessions he became a drunking atheist? Thank goodness the man didn't hang himself.

The falling away of faith of a man who has committed his life to God is not a laughing matter. Nor is alcoholism. I get that this is a joke. But it is not funny.

I will pray for you.

I suppose he couldn't face his own inconsistencies. Poor man - was trying to be religious and didn't have it in him. And couldn't live with himself as a result. If he could only find God.... but nobody can do that for him.
Alcohol often serves as a replacement for God.

I think you are probably joking, but listening to confessions has to be a pretty stressful job that leaves a person feeling dirty at the end of the day. I wouldn't want to do it.
