Brentwood is a nice area although a bit expensive, do not go and live in Basildump its a s*** hole, Chelmsford is a nice town with good shopping and plenty of nice bars and restaurants, its also about a 40 min commute into Liverpool St, the surrounding villages of Chelmsford - Writtle, Danbury etc are also pretty however they are a bit of a way from the centre of town.

Brentwood is a nice town, but house prices are quite high. Romford has a lot of clubs, but plenty of new appartments. Further out Chelmsford is a busy town with fast trains into London and cheaper housing.
