I'd go for the Matrix. You will pay full price for the Prius no matter what. Prius' usually run for about 25-30k without tax and license.
It will take you years to brake even the costs difference between the Matrix and Prius by gas savings.
However the Prius is good for carpool lane privelages. If you commute a lot, this is a good car for you.
Otherwise the Matrix is about 7k cheaper, gets very good gas mileage (30 city/38highway), and dealers will work with the price on this car since it's kind of a low volume car for Toyota. Hope that helps and good luck with your purchase.

out of those two the Prius is better rated, but in about 8 years the hybrid battery or something like that will need replacing for 10000+++ dollars. Get a Honda Fit or Nissan Versa. Thier better rated than either and more fun to drive

depends on what you want to do with it. the Matrix is just a Celica undercover. the Prius is made for commuting. Granted they both get amazing gas mileage, i would go with the Matrix as a have a night out on the town and race aroundand get around the corners car and i would use the Prius as my commute to work car. just my opinion.

How much time until you need one, Prius can take up to 6 months. Cost alot more too up to 10,000 more so really had to compare. Like saying do you want a corolla / matrix priced vehicle verses an avalon (two conventional cars) in price. usually they are not in same market...... Only same thing is size....
