Travelocity.com is a great site for air fares. You can set up an account there and use their (fare watcher) feature that allows you to put a variety of destinations in to where you want to fly to and from and when the price goes up or down an email is sent to you.
So for example: If you wanted to fly to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida or fly in somewhere close to there and wanted the best deal from say Detroit or surrounding airports you could type into you fare watcher:

Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale
Toledo to Ft. Lauderdale
Lansing to Ft. Lauderdale
Detroit to Miami
Toledo to Sarasota
and so on and so on

This will show your best flights there from surrounding cities all at once so you do not have to keep searching one at a time for the best deal.

Also hotwire.com and priceline.com are going to be the cheapest, but these sites do not allow you to see the times that you will fly in or out or the airline that you will be flying on for that matter.

Also see if the airport that is close to you flies independent airlines such as allegiant or southwest or airtran. These are smaller airlines that fly only certain routes between cities that can be cheap, but will not show up on sites like travelocity.com.
