if it sounds a lot like Spanish. So here's my stupid question, why have Portugese at all if it sounds just like Spanish (or vice versa depending on which one is older)? I don't mean to be rude, Spanish is my first language.

Part of linguistics is the evolution of language. Spanish sounds a lot like Italian too.
Since Portugal is an island, it's natural that it developed it's own language over time as it was "cut off" from the mainland.

Well, it doesn't sound just like Spanish. Closer to Galego, maybe, or even French with all those nasal sounds. Actually, I think Spanish sounds more like Italian than Portuguese, and is certainly closer to Catalan.
But aside from the sounds, there are many different words and points of grammar. I have a heck of a time figuring out where to put some pronouns in Portuguese, but in Spanish it's easy.
You could argue that all the Romance languages "sound a lot like Spanish" - that are all similar. But why dump on Portuguese? Why not drop Portuguese AND Spanish, and everybody learn Romanian? Better yet, drop them all and go back to Latin.

Well, it doesn't sound just like Spanish. It has a lot of similarities because they are both romance languages. But you can't simply obliterate a language spoken by everyone in Portugal and Brazil.
Interesting to note: Spain (the country from which Spanish originated) has various regional languages...Gallego (in Galicia) is very similar to Portugese. Catalan is like a mixture of French and Spanish. Basque is unlike anything else. And Asturias has it's own little language too. Each region is proud of their language and cultural heritage, but all speak Spanish too.

Yes Spanish and Portugueese are alike but there are some similarities. Believe it or not there are some spelling and vocab changes and there are some different symbols. And they pronounce certain words differently
For example the name Alfonso in Spanish is the same as Afonso in Portugueese.

I am a portuguese native speaker and can tell you I used to think the same about spanish... but these idioms are totally different in many aspects...
I usually understand things which are written in spanish... however, I can't speak and write it...

i TOUGH IT WAS THE SAME TILL i GOT IN cHILE. They may sound similar, but when u put all toguther differences are there! Some worlds are the same in English too! They are all similar, spanhish, port, Italian, french...
