I had some friends over and we were in the den watching a movie. My dog came in and jumped on the coffee table where I had some drinks and snacks. I swatted his head and made him get down. Then about 10 minutes later he hopped on the coffee table and this time he knocked over a drink. I got really pissed then because I warned him before and he should know better so I jerked him off the table, hit him several times really hard and yelled "NO!" then I threw him against the wall really hard and then kicked him hard when he came down. Needless to say he didn't hop on my coffee table anymore. My friends were all quiet and didn't say anything, so I wonder what they thought. I'm thinking the girls would see it one way and guys another but i could be wrong.

Realizing this is a joke question:

The real question isn't were you wrong to beat your dog in front of company, but if it was wrong period.
A smack on the nose is one thing, but a drop kick is animal abuse. The best way to keep your dog from jumping on the coffee table would be to take it to the nearest shelter, where it can find a loving home.

Do you think you were right to beat your dog? Do you a dog has the same mental state as a 5 year old child. Would you beat a five year old child? I think first off you should never hit an animal like that. That is how you teach aggression. One day he might jump up and bite you. And when he does remember the night you beat the hell out of him over some potato chips. I don't disagree with hitting him on the snout and saying no. Maybe you should take him to obedince class where you can both learn postive ways to deal with those situation instead of flinging him at the wall and beating him like that!

I am assuming no bones were broken, so it's not like you are an evil person. There is only one way to tell if you have beaten your dog enough for it to learn his lesson. If he doesn't jump on the table again, then your punishment was sufficient. If he does jump on the table again, then you have either given your dog brain damage or you didn't beat it severely enough. You might consider buying a bullwhip. That way you can just give it a few lashes without even having to get out of your chair. You are exerting too much of your energy when a few motions of the wrist can do a more effective job of beating your dog into submission.

Of course you were wrong to beat your dog - and it doesn't matter if you had guests or not. You must feel really good that beating your dog accomplished getting him off the table. What a victory for you. I bet your friends think you are a real jerk, that's why they didn't say anything. You don't deserve to have a dog in the first place. I wish I knew who you were - I'd report your sorry and pathetic butt to the ASPCA.

You shouldn't have animals. I really hope you aren't married or have any kids because you are abusive and if you would do that to an animal you would have no second thoughts about doing it to a woman or a child. Your friends probably thought you were the biggest jerk and most likely won't be friends of yours for much longer.

It is wrong to beat any animal at any time for anything. They have feelings too. Would you want someone to beat you like that? I wonder just how good friends they are, cause I would turn anyone in if I saw them treat an animal like that.
