Yes-we aren't God. I hate for something to suffer though. There are medications that I'm sure the vet can give an animal if they are in pain though. I worked in a vet's office for a very short period of time and the main reason why I quit was b/c I LOVE animals and they had to "put a cat down." I couldn't stand it-I have a heart and a conscious, so it really bothered me.

It is cruel, but, the responsibility stays with the owner, like get your pet fixed, and or spayed, I think that if you decide to have a pet take responsibility in knowing that the dog,cat etc will be around at least 10 years, and they depend on you to take care of them. I have a black Labrador she turned 17 in July, I had her mother "Justice" as well, I watched each one of them being born. And gave up alot, but I DO NOT regret my decision. I love "Tara" and pray that she is around another 4-5 years, but I do know that when the end came for her mother, she stopped eating, as well as stopped drinking, it was a Blessing when the vet arrived and she passed away into my arms. It is unfortunate that their are dog owners' that should not be owners, And I think that a mixed breed is far more interesting than a pure breed. YES, it is cruel, but to have a dog and then abandon it, is just as cruel. Spay or Nueter your animals, there is alot of animals that need good homes!!!

No, and yes. If the animal is sick and suffering, then I believe it should be euthanized humanely.
What I do think is cruel are the pounds that that don't euthanize by giving an overdose, but instead put several animals in a chamber and gas them. I don't' know if it's painful, but it is a slow way for some of them to die.
Spay and neuter your pets people.

I think it depends on the reasoning for it. If it's because the animal is dying from a disease and is in a lot of pain then the answer is no. If it's because some owner doesn't want to be bothered any more with their pet or if it is picked up by the city and they don't adopt it in their time limit then it is cruel.

Only if they are healthy, not in pain, young, or in misery with no hope of getting better. But if the animal is suffering from something painfull and there is no way to cure it, it would be cruel not to put it out of it's misery. but also they need to use a humane method for that type ofan animal, so death is not more painful than life.

I think putting animals to sleep when there is no other course of action is a mercy. Some animals have painful and terminal diseases or injuries and death can be a release from that pain and some animals have become dangerous due to human mishandling or simply a violent nature.
However, someone who puts an animal to death because of inconvienience or spite, or someone who refuses to spay or neuter their animal simply for pride are morally guilty of these things. Animals that are allowed to procreate freely cause overcrowding in shelters and create unwanted animals that will slowly starve to death if not put down in more humane ways.
Please spay or neuter your pet and if you find yourself unable to care for your pet or if it becomes a burden on you to care for it, please donate your pet to a local animal shelter so it can have a chance to find a family that will love it.

No. Just the opposite. It is a kindness. We can put them out of their misery. If you are talking about putting them to sleep to make room at the animal shelter because no one adopts them, that does seem wrong to me. People should adopt those animals or at least vote for funding so that those unwanted pets don't have to be put to sleep to make room.

No. It is done only after careful consideration of all the ways to best help ones pet. I certainly don't mean to be disrespectful of anyone, but in many cases this is as hard as "pulling the plug" on any family member. I have a great deal of empathy for people who have to make either choice.

it is if the dog is healthy. But, if the dog is very very old and no longer has a quality life (like he can no longer walk or enjoy life) or is very very sick with a terminal disease and is in lots of pain, then I don't think it is cruel at all. Sometimes the best thing we can do for our furry friends is to let them go peacefully when they are in great pain and there is nothing else that can be done for them.
