It's just a word, our schools have much bigger problems they don't need to punish people for using words. I think its overkill giving someone detention merely for using a word, but its the context of the words use that matters. It sounds like this instance is a gross abuse of power.

yeah i do. I didnt feel that way when I was in high school, which was only a couple years ago, but no matter what age you are, you should know by now which words are appropriate and which ones are not and there are plenty of other words that could have described how he was acting other than that word. I dont know if I would have given him detention but the rules at school are always set in front of us at the beginning of each new year so its really up to them

It is a severe punishment. The schools are trying so hard to have all you kids act appropriately. Sometimes is seems un-fair, but our Educators need to control not only physical actions, but verbal too. Don't let them get it in for you. Be a good student and the clue word is OBEY ! Even if this kid was a total Dick, prick, wait till you leave school property and then call him by his real name a Dick. Please don't let the Educators and Principal get it in for you. Work hard, aim for good grades and keep a low profile. There is nothing you can do about it now, so try to forget it and move on. Good Luck !!

I think that it is very important for a child to learn the importance of words and the weight that words can carry. I think an hour or two of captivity will help drive the point home that calling someone a name, no matter how deserved, has consequences. It helps keep those names with the proper weight and it helps the victim understand how upset and angry you were by braving such consequences just to utter it.
Sometimes you have to own up to what you do even if it seems unfair. Better to pay the consequence than have words mean nothing.

Yep. For no real reason, society has decided that certain words are inappropriate in some settings. The sooner the student learns that, the better he'll get along in the world.

Yes. Where I work (after-school program) you can get in trouble for saying "shut up." Different teachers may have different standards. "Dick" isn't the worst thing I've ever heard, but it isn't a very dignified thing to say is it?

Depends on how say it... Some usages are ok, which is re"dick"ulous. Next time you get busted saying dick, change it to another word by adding "tate" to the end or something, e.g.
Joey, you dick... tate this passage to me.

i dont think it is ok because its just a word now if they went to the extreme and said a different word then it would of been ok to give them a detention but other wise no its not ok

Yes. If a child is not using the word as someone's name (nickname for Richard), then it is a profanity, and should be discouraged by disciplinary action.
