Did they not set a shinning example for us all no matter what faith we have or not.

Our Humanist Community discussed things we could do or offer, but it was decided that the kindest thing for us to do for our Amish neighbors is leave them alone. They are having to endure enough outside interference right now, and I'm sure the presence of prying journalists is very disconcerting and probably hampering their ability to comfort one other. I personally wrote a letter to the publisher of Die Botschaft, the Amish newspaper, expressing my sadness over the tragedy and my deep admiration for the way the Amish community embraced the murderer's family, recognizing that his wife and family were innocent of any crime and in pain, too. You're right, they set a shining example from which we all could learn a thing or two about perspective and compassion.

I'd like to see the American Humanist Association make more public statements when such tragedies occur, but apparently the leadership doesn't consider that appropriate.

I'm a Christian.
Not Amish.
I do pray for them and the murder's family (they were also innocent).
