It's either allergies (esp. to beer, which has lots of yeast), or the swelling of veins in your esophagus, due to a history of long, heavy drinking. The portal vein, that runs through the liver, backs up, due to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and the blood can back up and even rupture into the esophagus. The swollen vessels, can interfere with breathing.

If you are a long-time, heavy drinker, please have this checked out, since it could kill you if you ever have to be intubated after, say a heart attack or accident!

BTW, if you're allergic to yeast, you would most likely experience symptoms such as sneezing! Let this be a hint for you...

It's an allergy - I'm allergic to alcohol too. It does seem to get better after a while - unfortunately years later. You've just got to manage your intake - and drink less. Sorry.

Some alcohol has what is called sulfites such as in wine. In some people this can cause an anaphylatic reaction. This could be the same for some that just has an alcohol allergy. Advise is to stay away from it until you talk to your doctor.

It's the sulphates that are added to the wine that is causing this reaction. If you must drink try organic wines.

Why not try sipping it? Your not suppose to gulp it down in one fell swoop, anyones throat would close up drinking it like that.

You are probably allergic to it. These kind of allergies only get worse, so I would recommend NOT drinking that kind of alcohol anymore.
