The best thing I received was a small, personal, hand-held fan. It was the kind that also had a water mist…that thing was great it fit right in my cargo pocket and didn’t weigh anything.
Phone cards, stress balls, Sudoku, crosswords, word searches, comic books, magazines, novels, movies, cd’s, envelopes, stationary, stamps, pens, pencils, batteries, disposable cameras, electronic games, silly putty, frisbee, hackie sack, foam footballs
A picture of a flying American Flag…I went months without seeing one once and it really reminded me why I was there.
I once received a baby jar of dirt from my backyard….had a piece of home. People also got leaves.
Egg crate mattress pad depending on location, comforters, pillows, stuffed animals, etc
Every toiletry item you can think of.
Fabreeze..or some sort of smell stuff to mask our odors.
Sunflower seeds, jerky, trail mix, dehydrated fruit, cracker jacks, Kool Aid packets… Junk food, junk food, and more junk food!!

Just think about the stuff that you can easily get in the states but may not come to them easily. Its as easy as that. When they recieve something that they can not normally get they not only enjoy the fact of getting it. They also just enjoy having a little piece of home with them.
Look at getting stuff like magazines, hard candy, or you can go to the local school and talk to the teachers about getting the children to write letters to them over there. I know I had that happen to me when I was deployed and it was the best thing I got. Matter fact I still have the letters and they would prob be something cool to pull out when I am old and retired just to bring back memories.

Cigarettes is the first thing that came to mind, but someone beat me to it. When I was on a ship deployed, food was a great thing to get, whether it be junk food, good food, or homemade food. CD's are great, books and magazines to pass the time. But really, any package we got - whether it was from family/friends or just nice people, it didn't really matter what was in it, it was just great to get mail. Mail call is the greatest!

I am in Iraq an I like getting pictures from home, cds and dvds. To tell you the truth it really doesn't matter. Just getting a piece of mail can really boost your spirits.
