It keeps the gallbladder from working properly. If it blocks the function completely they may remove the whole gallbladder because it can make you very sick. Better to have it out. They can take it out endoscopically. They make 3 little holes and basically suck it out. You'll be up and about in no time.

I have visions of the stones doing calculations of probabilities....
Anyway, they are fairly common, and people who have gallbladder stones have discomfort after eating. There is a procedure called a lithotripsy where they cut an incision close to your belly button, insert a tube, blow the stone into pieces then suck the pieces out of you.

people go their whole lives with gall stones, the trouble comes when a stone blocks the bile duct, then you have to have the gall bladder out.

You can probably live with it for a little while, but in can eventually occlude the common bile duct and your gallbladder becomes inflammed and will require surgery to remove it. At that point, you will need to change your diet.
Good Luck

16mm? That's around 6.25 inches ... which is damn big for a gall stone... Are you sure it's not 1.6 mm?
