My puppy is almost 7 months. I had him in an apartment since he was 2 months, then I moved back home with the parentals (who have a house) and he has been digging excessively in their backyard. I don't know how to get it to stop. My parents are getting really annoyed and I am about to drop 50 dollars to take him to training which is 2 hours away!! Also, he has a chewing problem. He chews on shoes :( I do not know how to stop him. He is such a sweet dog and I would hate to see him develop these bad habbits even further. Thanks in advance for the help :)

I want to thank all of you for the nice answers! I will try the cayene pepper thing. And as for the smart-asses..you try having a big dog and not letting it in the backyard....

You can use a little Cayenne pepper for his digging-just sprinkle a little where he is digging holes in the yard. For the chewing you are probably going to have to keep after him. Every time he chews on something that he is not suppose to take it away and tell him No then replace the object with a toy or a chew bone. I hope this helps you.

Wow! There are some really bad answers here!! First off, please never ever chain your dog, like someone suggested...I don't know how that would stop digging anyways. Digging is a sign of boredom. Your dog needs daily walks, daily attention, daily time in the house, and stimulating toys...like a Kong filled with peanutbutter. Your dog also needs to be given an appropriate chew treat everytime you catch it with a shoe...like a dentabone, or rawhide chew...and this chewing is due to the fact that your puppy at 7 months old, is still teething, so don't worry the chewing will eventually die down. Have fun!

I'm sorry to say that it comes down to the fact that your doggy is BORED!!!I can not tell you how many problems WILL be stopped by adding two walks o our current routine. Walk him in the morning run with him if you can and then add a run / jog to your afternoon. I had o PAY someone to come and make sure my puppy was getting added attention. After I started doing this potty training took affect and the digging on my CARPET stopped! The shoe hing i can not answer... its leather it smells like you so he will chew! Keep your shoes off the floor! I have had to just get in the habit of putting them high on a shelf its either that or lose more Bebe shoes... good luck to you!

Your pup is at the age that needs to chew on things to relieve the irritation of teething. Buy him some of the heavy duty plastic toys, the ones with little bumps on them, and some basted bones (at the petstore)
He digs for two reasons. He is bored, some dogs do it out of having a cool place to lay.
For the chewing on shoes, I would recommend keeping the shoes out of the pup's scent where he smells them. I have a dog that is infactuated with the smell of feet, and she used to chew on shoes. Another way is spraying the sourapple dog repellant. Please do not spray the sourapple in his/her mouth as one person suggested, but spray into the inside edge of the shoe, and the tongue of the shoe.
Digging problem...one of my dogs is a husky, and I had a serious problem with him digging. I let him dig only in the dirt area one time, just to see how bad he was. He had dug a hole, and layed in it, until I filled the hole. After I did that, he dug a hole again.
I finally let him keep his hole, and even occasionally dampen it for him. He doesn't dig anywhere else.

it is digging because she is bored and that is also why she chews. Training may not help withthis matter. You may want to think about walking her outside like when you had your apartment and buy a kennel to put her in if your gone or isf she chews on things.

for the chewing of shoes and such, get bitter apple. you can buy it at petco, petsmart or online if your not near a big pet store. i dont think walmart has. spray it in there mouth when there chewing something there not supp. to. make sure not to get in eyes and dont use product constanly, they could get sick. but, i've used it and it helped. the digging......ur gonna have to sit w/ him when he goes potty. or get a kennel and only let him in it, or put a huge area of rocks in one spot, tie him out to go in that spot........thats all i can think of.

It needs attention, and that you take it every other day to a park where it can dig to China.

Oh: and call pest control, you may have rats or moles below your house.

My safe and effective way is every day your pup digs, find the hole, and put ceyene pepper on it.
