To train your aerobic energy system, or your cardio system, you'll definitely want to do cardio. A good mix of steady-state work as interval training will bring your aerobic energy system out. Try to train aerobicly 3 - 4 times a week, and use the interval training no more than twice a week (it is taxing on your body). Be sure that your steady-state aerobic activities are at least 20 minutes, perferably longer.

Anearobic system is the system that is used for quick bursts of energy. Heavy weight training or even sprints or very short interval work can bring that system out. A good example of anearobic workouts might be sprinting 100-400 meters and working on developing that end of your speed.

A good fitness program definitely incorporates both of these, especially if you do any sort of running / racing.

Good luck.
