I have been a vet technician for years and the cause of this is almost always a bad urinary tract infection, and he may also have crystals in his urine which are caused by a Ph imbalance. Your friend should definitely take him to his vet as soon as possible to get his urine checked (or take a sample in that he caught himself in a clean dish---1st morning sample is the best) so that he can get on antibiotics and start feeling better. UTI's are just as uncomfortable in dogs and cats as in humans. If there are crystals found in the urine, he may have to go on a special dog food to help flush them out of his bladder and balance Ph. The vet may also request a urine culture besides the urinalysis to see what type of bacteria is growing and which antibiotics will work the best. Tell your friend good luck!!

This could be a lot of things, but most likely a urinary infection.
Your friend should get the dog to a vet.
If money is an issue, there are many low cost vets, and some Humane societies work with pet owners to get their pets the attention they need.

Blood in a pet’s urine, termed cystitis, is a common illness in both dogs and cats. However, the causes in dogs and cats are quite different and can be discussed at a different time. In this case, Billy came in with a significant amount of blood in his urine that his “dad” had noted. Upon physical examination, he was in excellent health. We collected a urine sample and completed a series of tests or urinalysis.

Could be anything from a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, kidney infection or even worse case scenario would be kidney cancer. Only way to know for sure is to take him to the vet and have a urine test done.
