The effects vary depending on the demon. Remember that demons are fallen angels and therefore have the same powers as their counterparts but use them for evil. Also, a true Chrisitan cannot be posessed, the bible clearly teaches that one can only be tested to the limits of their faith. Only those without faith can be posessed, though once the demon is exorcised most of these people convert.
There are demons who are messengers and simply intervene to cause someone to speak the message or rather deception of Satan; the opposite of messenger angels like Gabriel. There are demons who can cause physical discomfort through things like seizures or a disability; the opposite of guardian angels. Some can posess people to do physical harm to others, though this is rare; the opposite of the angels which belong to the Lord's army such as Michael. The greatest are those who deceive nations to follow them; Dagon, a god of the Philistines was such a demon.

Catholics have been casting out demons ever since Jesus and the Apostles did it.
Modern psychology says that most of the people who had demons cast out of them were probably miraculously cured from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. But their cures were still miracles.
The Catholic Church believes that real demonic possessions are rare but possible, so they keep a few exorcists around just in case.
With love in Christ.

Demonic possession is a malevolent form of spiritual possession; where one or more demons gain control over a person's body, which is then used for an evil or destructive purpose. Unlike in channelling or other benign forms of possession, the subject has no control over the possessing entity and so it will persist until forced to leave the victim, usually through a form of exorcism. Many cultures and religions contain some concept of demonic possession, but the details vary considerably. Some cultures, in particular the Roma people also believe that demons can also possess animals, plants, deceased persons or inanimate objects.
It can probably be deadly if say you throw yourself off a cliff or whatever to get rid of them (of if they induce you to).

"Demon possession" is a proof through itself. that's not a clinical one. Scientists invent a hypothesis, and then attempt to tutor it incorrect. And on condition that they can't hit upon a discrepancy, do they settle for it as authentic. With 2 competing theories, they seek for an try that could want to produce a diverse result from each and every concept, and carry out that try, then discard the concept failed. someone who believes in demon possession stops searching for different factors. this isn't clinical.

It can definately be deadly. Demons actually possess people to try to kill them. That is their goal. Demons have personalities just as you and I. Some people can be possessed with one and you would never know. They remain dormant until something or someone provokes them. Others can be quite angry and aggressive. Someone can be possessed by simply allowing images and practices of the occult . It is always important to know about who you associate with and what they do. We can open doorways to satan without even realizing it.

It's people playing make-believe; they get a thrill out of playing this game and deceiving people.
A long time ago, before people understood what viruses, infections, and bacteria were, people attributed various illnesses to demons. Medical science has long since put the "Demon" theory to rest in the medical community; however, there are still people who wish to delude themselves or others into believing that demons are in fact real.

1506 Christ invites his disciples to follow him by taking up their cross in their turn. By following him they acquire a new outlook on illness and the sick. Jesus associates them with his own life of poverty and service. He makes them share in his ministry of compassion and healing: "So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them."
1673 When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism. Jesus performed exorcisms and from him the Church has received the power and office of exorcizing. In a simple form, exorcism is performed at the celebration of Baptism. The solemn exorcism, called "a major exorcism," can be performed only by a priest and with the permission of the bishop. The priest must proceed with prudence, strictly observing the rules established by the Church. Exorcism is directed at the expulsion of demons or to the liberation from demonic possession through the spiritual authority which Jesus entrusted to his Church. Illness, especially psychological illness, is a very different matter; treating this is the concern of medical science. Therefore, before an exorcism is performed, it is important to ascertain that one is dealing with the presence of the Evil One, and not an illness.

If you become possessed, don't fight it. Just go with the flow. Then you'll be safe. Besides, don't they say that Possession is nine tenths of the Law? So you're already at a terrific disadvantage. ;-)
