try small approcahes to gain this dogs affection. Try carrying dog treats with you and gently toss them in his direction do this for as long as you need to until he starts to show you a gentler side once you are able to co exsist with him try walks with him alone.

You have to spend time with it, as much as you can afford.
Speak gently to it, no matter how obnoxious it gets. Tell it " You're a good boy". When he barks, resist to urge to just say no, or shut up. Tell it in the same tone, OK, or, I hear you. Just something other than "no".
Give it treats. This is the basic language that most animal understand.
If you live in the house with the dog, make sure you are the one to feed it. Tell whoever normally does it that you think it might help to the bonding process.
Eventually scratch it behind the ears (they love that). Top of the head works well too. You'll know you've won him over when he rolls on his back, and offers you his belly to rub. And, he will do it eventually.
Try to be patient. It will take a while.

Honestly, your expectations are a bit high for a dog that isn't yours. Many of these are very normal dog behaviors that do take effort to train out if you don't like them, but there's nothing inherently wrong with letting the dog on the couch or bed, so this is your personal preference. Your boyfriend has a different personal preference, and to him, the dog on the bed or couch is perfectly fine. Your best bet is to help him understand why you feel so strongly about your personal preference, but keep in mind that it is your preference, not the right, or only, way to do things.

do not listen to any of these people, they have no idea what they are talking about. that dog is being dominate over its owner and therefore it will try to be dominate over everyone else. You will not win until the owner becomes dominate or you do. Try this ignore the dog when you first come in the room. Then where ever he is, go over and step into his space letting him know that this space is yours,do this where ever he goes. don't say a thing just move into his space with out acknowledging him. Use your body launguage to tell himyou are boss, chin up, shoulders back chest out, but be calm and assertive. This has to continue until he stops hating and becomes calm and submissive. may take a few days. for get being nice that is just the opportunity he is looking for to be dominate over you.

He probably will never like you if he doesn't like you now. Hate to say it but I have never seen a dog not like you then all of a sudden like you.

there is a reason he's the way he is and even if you didn't have anything to do with his past you may have to learn to deal with it.
