Most of the goths I've personally met are Pagans, not Satanists. But I'm sure that there are goths from many different belief systems. Some may even be atheists or agnostics. One's preferred social identification or style of dress is not necessarily an indicator of their religious preference.

yes, ignorance is a good answer. I'm Christian, and I have many goth friends who are Christian. It tends to be associated with the the more stereotypical idea of "goths" who practice cutting and decide that looking morbidly at things is the way to go (not that it is always a bad thing - I am a pessimist by nature). And like I said, it's stereotypical, not every goth I know is like that, and the ones who are, are still nice people generally. Gothic is actually a language originating in biblical media, interestingly enough. interesting stuff. My advice - as long as you are not hurting yourself or others, dress how you want, and be you. And know truely, that God will love you even if you dress and act as such, as long as you don't turn on Him. God Bless.

I don't know. I'd say bad media and people's ignorance.
I like to wear black and paint my nails black, but I'm not a goth, yet people call me that. Then, my sister's boyfriend told my nephew that I worship the devil because I'm a goth. Neither of which are true.
I mean, true. I've looked up info about goths since people kept calling me that, but I don't think I am one and if you have doubts about what you claim to be, you're probably not what you claim to be.

This sort of generalization tends to come from self-professed hard core Christians who believe that anyone who isn't like them must worship Satan. It's not just goths; they tend to group Atheists in with the "People who worship Satan," even though such a claim is patently false (no belief in god really means no belief; Satan or devil included). I've even seen them group Pagans, Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs as "Those who worship Satan." Consider yourself in good company.

it is a world of stereotypes. when you go out of your way to make yourself look...wierd (to say it nicely). you must accept the stereotypes that come with it.
even your screen name gives me a picture of a person wearing all black with black nail polish with a liquid paper white face and black eyeliner. some wierd a** hair. probally carrying a hello kitty book bag just to be strange. and basically doing everything that you can to get someone to look at you....this is just based on the goth kids in my town but basically when i hear goth i do not assume satanist, but i do assume the " Street Punk" style.
i really do not mean this to be negative. because i too am very different. and i like being different. i was goth before goth was popular. now i am a walking light show.= (literaly)
i wear a very bright Yellow pink red green and purple tye dyed ankle length trench coat with a purple velvet lineing that has battery operated lights sewn into it. and a 2 foot tall pink and green tiger stripe top hat with lights on it. furthermore i sit on the street and smoke my hookah...
but when the cops stop to ask me what the hell i am doing i do not blame them for the stereotype because i understand that when you see something that is that far out of the normal you just have to question it.

Gothic has been around for many many years, but is now associated with Devil worshipers. The older folks dont understand how one wants to express them selves. The story goes that devil worshippers always wore and painted everything black so they would not be detected as well at night to do their evil deeds. This is a generation gap sorta thing. Enjoy being you while you can.

Cause they are narrow minded and un-educated. I am an Atheist and so many Christians on here think Atheist worship the devil to. We tell them over and over that we don't they just don't get it.

I agree. a persons appearance should not dictate their beliefs. we have people if you saw them on the street you would think your gonna get robbed! when you see them worship you realize they love the Lord and can relate to people I could never reach.
