Better idea is to send all the foreigners back home, they are 45%of the prison population, we've got all the scum from the rest of the world here now through Blair.

No because the military is not for everyone. If you were over in the desert fighting would you feel comfortable if the only person watching your back was a guy from prison that could care less about America or whether he lives or die. I know I wouldnt

Some people belong in Prison, that's the best place for them.
Having said that we should suspend the Human rights Bill, immediately release all Foreign Nationals held in UK Prisons and Deport them in order to alleviate the current dilemma with overcrowding ( Never mind spending obscene amounts of Money paying them to leave ) But no instead our idiotic Government is going to down grade prisoners and transfer them to Open ( the gate ) Prisons. Nice

This question has been asked so often and the horse pulling this cart whipped to death for so long that I can't even summon the indignation I used to feel when I read about or hear this question in real life.
Questioner, this is why that idea is jacked up:
(1) You still have to feed Soldiers three squares a day. Worse, you have to pay for their training, their equipment, and the cost of deploying them overseas to either Iraq or Afghanistan. Instead of looking at the $38,000 or so it takes to keep them in lockup, you're now looking at somewhere in excess of $120,000 per year, with an initial startup of perhaps $60,000 even before they get overseas (I can get better figures from some of the 92 series guys in the BN, if I bother them enough tomorrow).
(2) You are giving people who have failed to respect authority the position of being under an even harsher form of authority than schools and the police. Worse, you are giving these people guns, and the legitimacy to use those weapons wearing the uniform with the American flag on the right shoulder for everyone to see. So when some of your model prisoners lose control and either go on fragging binges or start looting and raping everything in sight? Don't say it's our fault you flooded our ranks with these losers when it starts showing up on CNN.
(3) French Foreign Legion setups are usually touted as the model for this, but even the Legion selects rigorously and enforces a sort of ... harsh discipline that is unheard of in the American military. If you're looking at this from a cost perspective, taking the 2 million or so people who go in and out of the penal system in the United States and trying to send them all to the Middle East and Central Asia on the public dime will break the bank. If you're looking at it from a moral perspective, I fail to see why "You either Fight or Die" is the sort of example a democracy should set for treatment of its prisoners (many of whom are still citizens) and how giving these prisoners weapons and the responsibilities accorded by military service is rational is completely beyond reason.
In other words, the idea sucks, and the day we start getting busloads of ex-convicts over at my infantry company, either I contemplate getting out early, or I resign myself to have to deal with unmotivated and criminal Soldiers barely worthy of the name.
Once again, I say: THE IDEA SUCKS. You couldn't trust these felons on the streets with saturday night specials, so you want to free them, put them in a uniform in large groups, and give them assault rifles now? BAD IDEA. REAL BAD IDEA.
If that isn't clear enough, I don't know what is.

I don't know about putting them in the Army but if the prisons are full, we have a lot of warships ready for disposal that could be used as accommodation. Anchor them out and guards could drop food onto their flight decks once a day.
If someone decides to sink it then tough.

What strange ideas you have.
Volunteer army - beats conscripted army hands down.
Prisoners have problems - mental illness, personality disorder, illiteracy, epilepsy , diabetes and other disorders, substance misuse problems. How would you expect such people to fight a war?
Watching tv at our expenses - what about the workshops where prisoners work? this is to help fund their care - to subsidise the tax payer.
People get an education to help with their rehabilitation. They get medical care to help with their rehabilitation, they get support to detox from drugs and alcohol - all to help with rehabilitation.
Prisons are for REHABILITATION not for punishment. Punishment is being separated from your partner and family and losing your freedom. Once that has happened the stay in prison is for REHABILITATION.
The military is made up of people who support their country and the Queen and are skilled soldiers who serve their fellow citizens and are prepared to die if necessary to preserve the way of life which we enjoy. They cannot be forced to do this they do it VOLUNTARILY.
Regards :-)

while you're honestly beneficial that each and each single prisoner is accountable of against the regulation and that each and each crime warrants a reformatory sentence (even the crimes you little question commit on a each and on a daily basis foundation), and you do no longer desire to stay in a civilised society (as you do now), then your thought remains extremely suspect. maybe there needs to be a finished overhaul of criminal regulation and sentencing to think approximately no remember if existence like punishment would be administered exterior of reformatory. in basic terms a theory.

People are in prison because they have trouble relating to authority and lack of discipline in their lives. The military is all about authority and discipline. I think your heart is in the right place, but this is not a good idea.

Going into a combat situation takes a lot of trust in your fellow soldiers. How would you feel if your son was sent into a combat zone with, thieves drug dealers, and other criminal types whose outlook on life is to cover their own *** and f**k the other guy. Your idea is an old one and it has rejected many many times
