Because so few people knew how to read and write in those times, it would virtually guarantee a person a good job. Those years saw a huge increase in Int'l Trade and businesses were hard pressed to find people to record even the most basic of business transactions.

If they couldn't read, than they couldn't write. If they couldn't write, then the Declaration of Independence wouldn't have been written and the United States would still be a country wanted and controlled by other countries.

Because that is how they communicated and knew what was happening or going to happen. Lots of Public Proclamations back then.
