At the restaurant I used to work at, servers would often sit on the edge of the booth with people while they took their order. The guests loved it, on the comment cards they would always write how nice it was. I'm not saying to cozy up with the people, but sitting down and chatting will seem friendlier and make them more likely to give you a better tip.

I'll give you some obvious and some not so obvious ways to improve your tips.
1. Get to the table as soon as people are seated. First impressions stick
2. Refill drinks. Don't wait for a drink to be empty. If it is anywhere near half empty you should fill it.
3. Be friendly, make small talk if possible. This depends on how busy you are and who the patron is.
4. Apologize if something goes wrong and fix the problem. Nobody wants excuses. Restaurants aren't perfect so fix problems quickly.
5. If people ask for alcoholic beverages card them, especially if they are over 30. Women love that.
6. This may sound wierd, but if you speak with an accent, preferrably an English accent, you will get bigger tips.

I always made sure that I spoke with the female in a male female couple more than I did the male. fast service..but un-rushed never let a glass get less than 1/4 full without re-filling or asking if they would like a re-fill. Do NOT flirt with male patrons, if you have an all female table with in site, they will think of you as the competition..not as a possible friend that could make an introduction..plus will think you are a floozy and won't want to give you their hard earned money...and know your regulars, by name if possible from credit card receipts, and use their names when addressing them....treat people as though they are the most important person in the world..( imagine your favorite actor/actress) what would you do special if they were sitting in that booth? Good luck!

Smile, greet them, be congenial, tell them the specials (with a smile like you like working there!), be upbeat! When you deliver drinks, you could ask about the weather, or did you hear about *team name*? Make a little chit-chat while you take the order. Don't be blase. Just be very polite, but not stuffy.
I've been known to let out a curse word now and again, and if I'm not swearing at them or the mgmt, I usually get better tips.
Keep everything refilled. Never see an empty cup or glass. If there's a spill, take care of it. If they're out of bread, refill it.
Just think how you would like to be treated at your favorite restaurant. That's always the first thing I said while training waitresses.

It really depends on what type of restaurant you work at....some places are the eat and run type...there isn't anything you can do because it is fast food type....just turn your table around faster, if each table gets up 5 minutes sooner, by the end of the shift, it would be an extra round of tables..*really. Be knowledgable, friendly, lots of smiles and be cheerful.
* If you are working at a small restaurant, take on some side responsibilities, help with inventory, ordering.... once you are on track..your boss might give you a higher base salary.

make sure to keep asking the customer if they would like anything else and if everything is ok. Also removing any plates from the table that are finished. I remember we went to a restaurant once and once we were done with our food they brought more plates with our food but never took the other ones and it was all very cluttered and we didn't tip very well because of that.

impress them dont write down the orders and carry the food out to them rather then having somebody else do it also be friendly and if the ***** about the food last time say something that is reassuring and not the normal answer that u think somebody else would say
also dont forget the condoments people ask for they hate asking twice 1 last thing try and make the food appealing especially the expensive stuff and specials with descriptive words

All that has been mentioned already is good advise.
And eye contact!!!!!!!!!
Also, be VERY aware of when they are ready to get up and leave to say an extra Good-bye and Thank-you.
You'd be amazed at how much pressure that can put on a person who is opening up their wallet, at that moment, to leave a little better tip.

Ask them how their meal was. Don't make too much small talk. Nobody likes to be interrupted a lot while eating. Just make sure they get the best service they can possibly get.
