Or did anyone study it in college?

My sister does. She made a decent living in photography before retiring to commercial real estate, but she said that her degree was a huge waste of money as far as any practical return on investment. If you have a little maturity, you can guide yourself to the appropriate technical education on a course-by-course basis. Our whole family learned photography from our father, who was an "advanced amateur" and she found that she didn't really learn too much that she didn't already know. This was in a 4 year degree program...

She made a few contacts through her university experience, though.

I hold a B.S. in Art with an area concentration in photography. That's how most schools teach it - as art. And as art, you probably won't make a lot of money at it unless you are extremely talented and have cultivated some good connections in the art world. There are, however, some schools which do teach photography with earning a living in mind. Brooks Institute of Photography is one.

The competition for well paying photography jobs is intense. If you have some talent and rely on random luck to get you good pix, you will starve. You really need to learn some basic fundamentals of design, color, shapes, typography to distinguish yourself from they guy who shoots 500 shots and gets one good one. When you shoot 500 shots - you should be able to get 200+ good ones and 50 or more EXCEPTIONAL photographs.

I started to get a degree at OSU but they were going to close the department the next year so I switched to art.

But I am now a graduate from the New York Institute of Photography

I am slowly working my way towards an associates degree in photography and I have recently established a small portrait business.

The competition is fierce in this area tho. Fortunately for me, it's not mandatory that I make a profit, but if you want to make a living at it, it's a hard task.

Me. It was a worthless waste of time. I have a great hobby, but cannot make any money from it.
