We have him in Soccer now, but he has a kidney disease and has a hard time keeping up with the other kids. I want to give him a hobby that will enhance his self esteem without having to necessarily compare his strength or speed with other kids. I was thinking of Karate classes. Any other ideas would be GREATLY appreciated! We live in Northern California. Thanks!

Please no rude answers insuinating that I'm not taking my son's feelings into consideration. I'm going to talk with him about what he wants to do OF COURSE, but I'd like to be armed with ideas should he ask me what his options are. And again, I said sports OR activities - I'm not looking for just sport related ideas. Thanks again for all the great ideas already. I appreciate it! :)

Don't have other ideas, just want to support your idea of karate/other martial art type of class..........
That will build his self esteem up alot, not to mention self discipline/respect etc, and it's something that he can really grow in....
with most martial arts, size/strength doesnt always matter so much, there are certain skills/techniques he can learn so that he will do fairly well even with someone twice his size,
also he will be able to defend himself better which is another bonus, (Every school has some sort of bully, and chances are he *might* get picked on one day or something, either for his size or for some other reason, and this way he wont have to worry or be afraid, )
also want to note, there are tons of different types of martial arts, karate, tae kwon do etc......... some focus on punches, some kicks, some just all around defense etc, if you went for this i'd advice to look up the different types and talk to the instructors etc, and see which would be best for your son,

I would think a non-contact sport would be good. How about gymnastics? I used to coach, it's great at building self-esteem and great social skills for kids that age? There are some things he may be able to do more quickly than the bigger kids, and again it's not a contact sport so he won't get plowed into and be at an unfair advantage. Horseback riding would be another great option, horses are great therapy for anyone of any age.

All of the answers I read are Great! I'd also like to suggest 4-H. It's not just animals, but so many other great activities. Cub Scouts is also a great way to spend time with your son.
My youngest son was small for his age, and in high school he also wrestled, ran cross country, and track. He was never the "star", but he contributed to the efforts of the team.

If you live anywhere near San Francisco I suggest trying Lily Lau/Eagle Claw Kung Fu. Other than that, the martial arts are a wonderful way to not only build self esteem but to encourage self discipline as well as athletic ability.

What about playing an instrument of some type. Why does it have to be sports. My son loves to play the guitar. He also plays baseball but that is only six months out of the year. He can play the guitar whenever he wants.

Swimming would be a great sport! I'm on a swim team, and I know that you usually don't compare your speed to others. It's a very fun sport, and he can make a lot of friends too, and he'll get a lot stronger!

My son had an eating disorder for the first 3 years of his life. He is 8 now and in third grade. He is about as big as the first graders. I enrolled him in karate. Being little is a bullies first target and I thought it was important for him to learn to protect himself.

Swimming classes. It really is a great sport. My five year old loves them. He is also involved in Karate classes. He was invovled in soccor until he no longer liked it. He has FAS and I've found the boys invovled in Karate and swimming make fun of him less. I wish you the best of luck!
